I'm using Google Chrome for MSW and much of my other browsing. Too many issues with Firefox (which is about to come off my PC due to those "issues") and IE has it's share also. I'll not upgrade to Win10 in this lifetime but probably switch to Linux in the near future. Only thing holding me back is one small issue with an important application (to me anyway).

Peter, If you don't have it, get a copy of "The Billy Ruffian" by David Cordingly. I think the photos of paintings alone will help you. Plus there's a "reconstructed" set of plans by Norman Swales on page 12. Unfortunately, I've not been able to find a hard copy of just plans alone.

Miniature table saw blade compatibility
mtaylor replied to Jim Rogers's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Hmm.... expansion slots? From what I've seen, those only show up on the low tooth count blades. Then again, I'm usually running the high tooth count "slitting" blades as I'm normally cutting thinner wood. One of the key things is to make the cut, shut down and check the blade temperature. I do very limited runs unless it's mass cutting for say, frame blanks. Even then, I didn't have heat build up. -
Hello Martin, Welcome to MSW. The best way to get help and improve skills is to open a build log. You'll get help and encouragement.

Well, I hope they had proper beverages and food at the party, Dave. Nice work on the bowsprit.

Miniature table saw blade compatibility
mtaylor replied to Jim Rogers's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Short answer "yes" but you MUST use the Micromark adapter. Note that Hobbymill used these (Thurston) on their Byrne's saw: http://www.thurstonmfg.com/cut-off-saws.html with the 1/2" hole. Have look here to link to Jeff's article on using the Thurston blades with the Byrne's saw (or any comparable saw): -
The "likes" themselves (like who liked it) mysteriously disappeared during the upgrade, or so it seems. The like (reputation) count didn't drop... so maybe it was a feature and not a bug.

Excellent fix to the bit problem... I think the old saying about "necessity being the mother" applies here.

What I'm led to believe is that you didn't loose the "like" count, just the indication that someone liked it. It appears to be working as it should but the "likes" on posts before this last update disappeared. In other works, the icon and names went but the number of likes didn't disappear. You can check this by looking at your "reputation".

Just a question... when did the Constitution get anchor chains? I thought, and could be wrong, that she had cable for the anchors for much of her life.

Maury, Look around second hand shops or even yard sales for a pressure cooker. The water boils at a higher temperature and being under pressure the steam would get forced into the wood a bit deeper than boiling. Sadly, I dropped my old pressure cooker and it was dinged to the point the lid wouldn't seal.

Need a tip on staining or coloring the running rigging
mtaylor replied to Tallsails2's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
Bill in Idaho, I've heard of india ink being used (diluted) but I'm not sure if the alcohol is needed for diluting. If you try it, let us know. -

You can also make your own black glue and have the shade the color you want from pitch black to light gray... get some pigment form the art store and mix that in with the glue. -

Well.. I'm hoping to get things moving faster this week as it'll be too darn hot to even go outside (100-115 F) for the highs and in the low to mid 70's F at night.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
