Totally-wet-behind-the-ears-noob question
mtaylor replied to jpooch01's topic in Wood ship model kits
Welcome to MSW, John. Just one bit of advice... Have fun! Yeah, we all have those "oh crap" moments but overall this should be a relaxing and rewarding hobby. -
I would explore what Phil suggested first. If you're not staining it or finishing it, sometimes white glue and water (50/50) as several light coats will stiffen wood. As always, test first. Note, generally this method works for hardening up balsa wood.

Matching wood types
mtaylor replied to ctclock's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
There's other names for that wood so if you can't find it under abachi, check the other names: http://www.woodworkerssource.com/online_show_wood.php?wood=Triplochiton scleroxylon -
Wand? Like a curling iron? I use an old curling iron (and properly grateful to the Admiral) and heat both sides. Start with the inside, hold the bend, hit the outside and then repeat as needed until the bend is proper and stays in shape. Others may use a different method but like many things... this is what works for me and "your mileage may vary".

HMS Victory new colours
mtaylor replied to Paul Jarman's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
If the pigments came from different locations then, for example, there might be a difference between red ochres. Also the person who missed could influence the color. But generally speaking, they should be close. -
Latex paint?
mtaylor replied to achuck49's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
Latex is the current base for most model paints. The difference between house paint from the hardware store and model paint is the size of the color chunks. They're larger in house paint. Model paint makers grind the paint color into smaller pieces.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
