I didn't know McDuff was still around. Hopefully he'll come back after he's finished with McBeth. Goofy? Nope, no more than any of the rest of us. Do be careful with the ebony and wear a facemask as the dust can be anything from mildly allergenic to toxic depending on your immune system. Plus it gets everywhere and stains blades and sandpaper. The upside is that it looks great. I can't judge nor critique wood choices as where on the model it is located and the finishing of it is everything.

Just amazing work and those figures add so much to this ship. Wonderful, Nils.

Super nice work, Denis. I'm fascinated by where this is headed.... I have no idea, but fascinated anyway.

Did you check the pinned topic at the top of this sub-forum: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/384-where-to-buy-wood/ ? Midwest woods used to sell more than basswood and I don't know if they still do. Many local hobby shops used to carry them. I think they have a website. Been awhile since our local shop carried them so I don't know what's available. Do you have a small table saw? There's quite a few places that sell sheet stock that can be ripped.

Les, For color.... usually they seem to be white on the bottom. As for the rest.. I think it's Captain's choice. Here's a link to a pinned topic for Chuck's longboat kit: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/629-18th-century-english-longboat-by-chuck-c1760/ Here's the search result for longboats in the kit builds: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=search&fromMainBar=1 In the scratch area, there's a few builds of longboats only but most longboat builds are part of the ship project.

Cats and dogs know when need to stop working and go do something fun. Or at least that's the way it seems. I love those hatches.- 4,152 replies

Erik, Those are great memories and should be cherished. I'm sure he loved the updates and also had fond memories of those trips also. I can't think of a more fitting tribute than dedicating this build to him. No rush on getting back into things... you'll get things sorted out when the time is right.

She's getting there, Denis. That deck is getting crowded a bit but I love all the details going into her.

Have you ever noticed that it's often put: "You're going to go play with your boats again?".

Shop Made Dremel Drill Press- Not my idea
mtaylor replied to Mike40's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
I think Jay provided a lot of inspiration. I do recall what Carl mentioned about the drillpress.... -
Julie, There's a known issue as MS "upgraded" the Update from their end and issued a patch for the computers. You might Google "Windows 7 Windows Update" and then get the update early in the process.

That's good to know then. I Googled and dug around and all I found on crowsfeet were one's like I posted. Just can't trust Google anymore.....

Shop Made Dremel Drill Press- Not my idea
mtaylor replied to Mike40's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Mike, I think that came from here: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/5783-a-review-of-a-mini-mill-from-little-machine-shop/ Jay did a topic on tricks and tips that might also help: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/11214-how-to-make-best-use-of-your-milling-machine-tips-and-techniques/ -
Mark Crowsfeet were later than this and went from the front of the top to a euphroe and back up to the top, repeatedly. See the first pic/drawing attached. These run between the stays and involve blocks... bunches of blocks. You can see them on the shot of my Wasa attached.

The rigging is going to give me headaches and probably induce me to partake of adult beverages. As a side project I'm seeing how small I can make feedthroughs with sheaves (real or dummy) for the lines that go through the hull and belay to a cleat. Worst case... I'll just drill a hole The plan may not be viable, but i don't see any other choice except to install the main mast and associated yards and then rig it before I add the quarterdeck. That just doesn't seem prudent. To facilitate this, I'll have to cut her free from the build board once the gundeck is planked and ceiled. That will give me about 2 inches less of framing in the way.
-
Dave, I have no idea what it's called either but the Wasa had it also. Seemed to be common for the era.. so there must be a name for it besides "headache" or "reason to consume large quantities of alcohol". Edit: I checked Mondfeld... They're simply called "stays". Later those blocks and lines were not used.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
