Thank heavens I only have a small dog who can't jump up on the bench. Although anything that hits the floor is hers.... That's a very good repair. Looks like it's never been damaged.

Nice work, Bill. I'm loving this build. -
Looks lovely, Mike. Do leave some extra on the frames as fairing will take that down even further.

Congratulations on the excellent rigging, Bob. I like the way the blocks don't overpower the stuff in the air.

Alan, It happens to all of us at some time or another. There's a saying in IT: "It's not if something will happen, it's when something will happen." I too, thought it could never happen.. then it did. Luckily it was an old laptop but there were some files... Now all pc's and the laptop have back drives attached.

Well done, Dave. Everyday is a new model and a new experience, right? I guess I should add "and from my experience it's also a new day to feed the scrap bin".

Pasanax, Go here: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/forum/14-building-framing-planking-and-plating-a-ships-hull-and-deck/ At the top, there's three pinned topic on the planking and how-to... Bindy, I think it's your call.... La Belle Poule (1765) shows 25 to 60 feet per plank, though I think the 60 might be a bit long. On the other hand, Le Venus (1782) only shows the complete strake with no length on the planks. I would hope that some like Gaetan or one of our more versed French ship builders can help as I'm a novice on these ships...

Hi David, Nice work going on there... Printing... that machine is from the "old" hot lead typesetting days. "Lead", "leading" is the space between the lines of type. And I think "rule" is the name of what it does... a ruler. Been awhile since I've been around typesetting, so I'd have to do some serious Googling.

Looking excellent, Jesse. What the others have said about "there will be blood".. and DNA apply. I think that's actually the first rule of model ship building.

I'll keep my hopes up that your hospital visit won't be terrible. Lovely waterfront and any other occasion, you'd probably be very happy to sit there.- 4,145 replies

Jay, I like the caulking. Even the "defects" look like what one sees on a real ship. Have a look at EdT's log. Ed uses copper wire and liver of sulfur for black nails. Quite few others are now using it as it doesn't stain the wood like blackening solutions. The nice thing about MSW and this hobby is that there's a 1000 & 1 ways to do things.... Anyway, the liver of sulfur and copper are thought.

Gaetan is right about adjusting the work area height, in my opinion. Here's what I have.. a movable computer desk I got dirt cheap at Office Max when they closed the store. On top is a slab of wood with four legs. I can flip that over to that it's as shown in top foto. If I want, I put the legs down and it's higher (2nd photo.. but not a good shot). Or I can remove it completely. While Gaetan's is fully adjustable, mine is either desk height or 9" inches higher.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
