Mary Rose 1545 by tarbrush - Scale 1:72
mtaylor replied to tarbrush's topic in - Build logs for subjects built 1501 - 1750
John, Have a look at Jeronimo's (Karl) Bonhomme Richard build. He's done the stern, mid-section, and now the bow separately. I don't know if he plans to put all three pieces together though. -
I'm pulling up a chair also. As for the alleged typo, I thought you had it right. I've been out on lakes in the summer and that crowd definitely uses some colorful language. Especially as the day wears on the waterski boats move closer.

Hi FNG, I would suggest a build log as that's a good way to get help. Have you checked out the other logs? On the wood... generally those are mm. So 0,5X4 is 0.5mm X 4mm. They use the European style of decimals not the American. The comma is the decimal point. Here's two good links to sources online for translating: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/7325-nautical-terms-italian-to-english/?hl=Italian http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/5809-italian-dictionary-moved-by-moderator/?hl=italian

Well done on the teeth, Sjors. Will the rigging spiders be able to help or is this just a Sjors' task?

I believe MicroMark offers similar grab bags but, as I recall, not at that price.

The drum looks great, Popeye. Everything else looks great also. I've always loved the detailing you do on the pilot houses and this one looks like it will be wonderful as well.

H.M.S. Triton
mtaylor replied to Mickey's topic in HMS Triton - 28 gun frigate's Cross Section Build Logs for HMS TRITON
Hi Mickey, Lovely work and lovely wood. By the way, maybe it's the camera angle but I'm not seeing the rabbet on the other side of the keel. -
Wow.. excellent joinery. I'm smiling over those frames.

Dreadful indeed, John. That would be about 21 degrees C, Christian. Well.. the framing is cherry but it's going to be hidden. The keel and stem are boxwood. Everything else will use what was described in post 738. Paint? Nope... not here.

Thanks for the "likes" and comments. Yes, Iove the pear. Very easy to work with and leaves a crisp edge. And the color is a added treat. George, Go back to post 738. I list the woods and where they'll be used. But the short answer is: yes. Swiss Pear for the exterior planking.

Hartmut, By all means, show how you make the bits and pieces if you can. We all like the "how do you do this?" types of posts.

Can i live without a BYRNES TABLE SAW
mtaylor replied to shihawk's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Shawn, I can only answer one of your questions: Blades are from Thurston. http://www.thurstonmfg.com/cut-off-saws.html And if you haven't done so, head here for some excellent tips: http://www.hobbymillusa.com/byrnes-saw-operation.php -
First bit of planking is done with Swiss Pear. Just the counter so far. I've hung the stern post and rudder blank for position and to make sure I made the hole right. There will be a bit of ebony trim over the exposed yellowheart after the rest of the planking goes one. And "above" the counter and below the lights I'll be putting in the shaped trim strip after the rest of the stern has been planked. All in all, I'm pretty pleased.

He was ahead of his time and then there was the reluctance of the various Boards to change things. That reluctance of "if it works, don't change it" and "that's the way we've always done it" seems to be a big factor.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
