De Zeven Provinciën 1665 by YankeeD - Scale 1:50 - according to drawings by Mr. O. Blom - First wooden scratch ship build

Recommended Posts

Just a short intermediate update, the orlop has been closed.

The next phase will be the insude hull planking. it fits 3 streaks from topside orlop to main deck.

1 is already in place the maindeck wagers (deck clamps??).

Now it will be 1 streak of about 14mm from orlop to underside of gunports and then another from that to the maindeck wagers.

Hans

This is the first I have checked in on your build.  Your work is excellent.

Your history is also interesting.  I see that you are from near Eindhoven and I know that town has an extreme historical story, especially during WWII,  and I believe  is the original home of Phillips Electronics.

I look forward to following your build.

Thanks!!! Yes, I am going to stain it later on. I intend to make it blackish. A little like the method and colour Mr. Hollom uses on his HZ model here on the forum only a little more blacker.

I already did some test pieces but am not quite sure.

it looks very nice.........have you tried to add in the reddish quality?    the lighter samples of the color does show the grain better......you'll know more when the entire deck is done  ;)

  • 1 month later...

Well it has been some time since I called in. Work stopped for several weeks as I had another project to do and we took some holidays. As I had had enough of planking I started some work on the stern.

I was not satisfied with some frames of the sternwindows so I started making some new ones. Nice to see how the older wood has already stained by itself.

In my other dutch build log we have had some discussion over the two ports just below the twisted cornice. They are definitively no gunports but it is for me also not clear what they serve for.

Some say they even dont belong there on the 7P but Blom's drawings are very clear in this.

Opinions are welcome.

Hans,

Those two ports might be air ports for letting fresh air in below decks and also used as loading ports for supplies, etc. from the ship's boats.

Jan,

If there's guns on that deck, then maybe but only if the port will allow the muzzle to clear.  Otherwise the muzzleblast will happen inside the ship.   It would also depend on how close to the waterline they are.

Jan,

Hans says they're not gunports.  But you're right, they could be with the aft most 2 guns being moved there as needed.

Then again, Wasa has two ports like that with guns...   confusing.

In the cross sections drwan of the hollandisvhe zweidecker, you can see that there is no need for ventilatipn: these orts are on the same deck as the windows. Above. Also you can see they are in exactly the same height above deck as the ports in the side. These ports are intended as gunports.

Ouch... November last year!! That's a long time since I posted.... Time moves fast if you are having fun, no?

Well Not much has happened, save another year passed. I finshed the work on the transom (thanks for the word Popeye!) and on the windows therein.

I had to do some restorations here and there, as during the passing of time the wood shrunk and some gaps appeared.

Its probably the winter season here which can be very dry (<20% humidity).

All in all I am quite happy but the BIG question is........ which next step????

Inside hull planking?

Fix and finish the transom? I do not want to finish and fix the transom as I rather like it when it still can be removed, but somewhere in time I will have to...

Maybe the first Wale?? after which I could do the lower outside hull planking up to the first gunports...

All choices to be made....

I am looking forward to the finished product

Well, as I have no deadline, it will probably still be years to see her completion.... and I am even not sure what level that will be??? ^_^

I work as I feel up to it. Sometimes I bend over different projects and nothing happens for weeks or months.

Well, Its been a while, so time for an update. The build was postponed also a couple of weeks due to another project.

I think the pictures are selfexplanatory. There are still doors in the constabels chamber but I decided they will be deleted.

Now to continue with the inside hull planking.

  • 1 month later...

After a nice holiday, we went to see Taiwan and Japan, I thought it time for another update.

Not much happened as we were away quite some weeks.

I finished the inside hull planking from the main gun deck and on one side I finished the inserts for the gunports for the same deck.

Its not actually correct as how they did it (according to Bloms'drawings) but its the best way that works for me.

The inside will come flush with the inside hullplanks but the outside will be recessed. I will sand them to the present frames. After that the outside hull planks (about 1.5mm thick )will be mounted leaving a recessed gunport where the gunport lid can be fitted. I do intend to leave them removeable so I can work the outside hull planking against it and leaves me the opportunity to sand the planks flush with the gunport hole in the frames. (I hope this is clearly explained??? )

Once that has been done I can fix them in place. (If anybody has a better idea its welcome).

Next steps the gunport inserts for the other side. Its a tedious work.

Rgds Hans

In the mean time I finished all the inserts for the gunports.

As to be sure, before I start working on the outside hullplanking and the wales I checked the hull and sanded it a little more to be sure the curves are right.

59268ecf32b16_20170510_150907(Custom).thumb.jpg.bfeae9271286892e1b58cb1ba019e839.jpg

Next steps were the first wale which in all is the second wale. After that I added 10mm hull plank under which the first wale comes.

The running of the first wale I mounted deviates (only in the beginning) from the drawing but as it looks good on the ship I let it be. No idea how the difference came to be. I checked the line/curve several times.

I will now finish this starboard sides first and second wale and then up to the port side.

Over night I clamp wet planks in a very simple but for me effective way. The are a little oversized so I can also sand them into the curvatures.

I finished both sides 1st and 2nd whale and inbetween plank and started on the hull planking towards the keel for which I turned the ship unside down again.

I foud a nice see through....

I will equally work and continue both sides hullplanking untill ready. I stopped using nails and found a way to secure the planks without nails. I will do the nails later. I found the nails and positions were getting rather disturbed from position. So not nice and regular. By doing them later all at once I can do that nice and regular.

Thanks Nils.

I still think its very corse and rough and not so nice and polished as I see some other builds.

But then again in those days I guess it was more rough as we feel it should be maybe...
