I do have some reservations about the gun carriages. To me they look very small and light compared with the size of the guns. Also, the trunnions are usually bedded down into the cheeks of the carriage so the recoil force is directed down into the wood. Before you do a lot more work on guns, you should check some sources. Dan, I`m pleased you are enjoying the build.... Thanks for your comments with ref. to the carriages. I already recconed with feedback related to the size and design of the carriages and pivoted trunnions. The reason is that the gunbarrels should point out horizontal or a bit upward, instead of wedging at the upper side of the gunport (when the bulwarks are made later on). also the length of the carriages should be limited (space) to appr. 20 mm, when considering the aft two block-tackle for pulling the carriage back for reloading. The 32 mm guns of RB were a bit too short, and the next larger size of carriages were too large. I did check some sources, but found that there were next to non dimensions /ratings given. When using the smaller carriages the gunbarrels had to be set a bit higher, thats why the trunnions were done in this way What came out is a compromise I can live with... For the upper aft sternplate I thought I`ll mount an eagle in dive flight, ( here paper template) concentrating on his prey, with the background in light azur blue, and perhaps a golden frame... The two parts are glued together with white wood glue. Mirabell61 Posted October 30, 2017 Author Share #135 Posted October 30, 2017 (edited) small update : brought on the main deck ( 0,8 mm ply) for planking on the model, with port side cutaway and some outcuts for gratings and stairs and masts. On the transom there are some diagonal placed stripes of the 6 mm wide red- cedar planking. A model out of a box kit would certainly develope faster, but due to scratch build and no pre- laser cut parts, every detail has to be dealt with seperately..... Nils some of the deck beams require thin eaqualizing spacers the curvature of the deck is quite strong 3-dimentional the port side deck- and hull side cutaway will enable good view into the model.... the red-cedar planks in their natural colors have pencil caulking, but I think that will show up after fine sanding and surface treatment later on.... the poop deck end piece in sky blue color. The card template for the upper deck with outcuts is dry fitted for making the raw deck after it..... Mirabell61 Posted November 5, 2017 Author Share #144 Posted November 5, 2017 Update : yesterday had a little fright, when viewing from bow to stern over the length axis I recognized there was a little warp in the hull, due to the unsymmetrical planking arrangement and the tension of the planks on the framework. Was a bit upset, but that was to be expected. Then, after seeking a solution to to compensate the warp, the model was clamped in a vice at the front keel portion, and a thicker plank tied to the upper stern deck, so giving a lever on port side where I could lay a lead weight on over night, in order to twist back the warp. If I may suggest - mist with water the areas subject to the greatest torque while they are under strain from your weight. That might help the wood accept the new configuration and lessen the tendency to spring back over time. To check, lay several rods across the bulwarks perpendicular to the centerline. I have always called these 'winding sticks' although I do not know where the term came from. Sight over the tops of the sticks and they should all be parallel to each other. Otherwise, excellent progress. I am thoroughly enjoying watching your build as it goes forward. I had the same idea with spraying water mist onto the wood when under strain while the torque was on, but then was too anxious to get unwanted distortions. I`ll keep that good sounding suggestion in mind though, thanks for your input on that, trust it may help others who possibly have the same problem The more planks that go on makes the hull stiffer and stiffer, and a light weight hull at the same time. As I have single planking and a raw plank thickness of 1,5 mm, some of the thickness shall be sanded away during the fairing of the surfaces. Mirabell61 Posted November 6, 2017 Author Share #147 Posted November 6, 2017 (edited) Update : about 3/4 of the planking is done, it went quite well so far, only 4 planks had to be tapered a little bit in the bow area, and no stealer planks fitted so far. On port side the viewing openings can clearly be seen. I hope all stays well and will overstand careful sanding during fairing. The planking is glued on with PVA white Express glue As the plank edges were not put glue on, I added some very thin viscosic white glue (Uhu Holzfest) in to the thin gaps from the outside. It cures fast, is transparent and is quite hard. That glue is normaly used to repair-glue loose wood joints on furniture, chairs, etc., and I have good experience with that.
