Foot ropes.

There was a question about the foot ropes. They were not depicted from before the year 1600. At the end of the 16th century, many inventions were made in the field of shipbuilding. One of those things was the use of foot ropes. Before that time they were usually not there because the two main yards of the lower sails were lowered on the deck. There the sails were stowed and then the yards were hoisted again. The sails could then be lowered from above. In the Netherlands, the railing had long time the name "rahout" (ra = yard, hout = wood). Which also indicates that the yards were lowered on it. Barentz's ship from around 1595 did not have those footropes either, which was clearly visible in prints from that time.

Moving on to the tops. Creating an accurate 0.75mm thick wooden hoop took some trying. Finally, I looked at the production system on the dividing device under the mill. The dividing device was a bit wobbly, I found a system on the net to adjust the length of the collets and center them.

Base plate leveled on a lathe..

Milling works great by rotating the hands..

The board is glued to the hoop and carefully cut off..

Milled to the correct strength..

Now the top hoop. She is very fragile..😪

The second plate weakened under the cutter. After 0.1 mm, it removes sensitively..

Continuation of making hoops. My first attempt from the board broke years later. Second attempt according to reality from glued parts..

I had the cutters narrowed to 3 mm to shape the posts..

Now I will gradually create the shape of the posts, then they will be cut..
