I’m not sure what to say about the pinrail issue on early 17th century vessels, other than perhaps Vasa is your best guide.  When in doubt, personally, I like to fall back on the Van de Veldes for the clarity of their drawings.

Thank you. I already know that a ship from this period will not have many credible sources and images. But I enjoy the building!

I finally found time to shape a lion. I studied carving a bit, a little lion anatomy. And he started.
Workplace supplemented with photos of a Lion replica Batavia..

 

 

 

Beech is probably not an ideal wood for carving, but the figure will be painted, so maybe it doesn't matter so much. I had no other hardwood.

Your step by step carving photos are great.   I love my micro chisels, but prefer to start with carving burrs as you show, then get the tiny details with the chisels.    I FINALLY purchased a mill and have seen so much on your build where it can be used.

I'm not familiar with beech (we don't have many beech trees in Oz). I use pear wood and have good results. But the best is supposed to be boxwood - I can't say from personal experience because I've never used it.

 

Having said all that, you're doing very well with your lion, so I don't think there's a problem anyway.

The words of a sculptor I read still ring in my ears. He said he had not created the statue, it was inside the block he was working on. Just removed the excess material ...😇 I tried to create even more details, now it's done ..👌

Those words on sculpture are attributed to Buonarotti -  “The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, I just have to chisel away the superfluous material.”  Most know him more by his first name, Michelangelo.
