Beautifully done.  At the scale you build the ice yacht the details are especially great. You can add so much more.

You thought "outside the box" when building this yacht. MSW is not ships anymore.

Hello Jack, Very nice job on the yacht, I am thinking that this is a great subject to model because it gives all the advantage of working with the sails and their configuration and attendant details without having to plank a hull.  Also because it celebrates winter.

By the way it snowed here overnight and is still snowing.

Jack,

Noticed the wood runners is that the norm, do they perform better than metal, and does the width have to do for performance, speed and turning???

Congratulations on finishing your Ice Yacht.  You did a beautiful job on this model and I like all of the details you added.  I hope to see this model at the Northeast Joint Clubs Conference in April.

John, no ! The real runner is cast iron set into an oak board. See Post #59 for a photo of an actual runner.  I simulated the runner with wood on the model  because I couldn't figure out how to craft a metal insert at this scale. My metal working skills are very limited. ;) If I figure it out I will replace the wood runner with a more accurate one. It's just bolted on.

On the real boats the cast iron  blade is shaped at 45 degrees on each side, the actual surface contact with the ice is extremely thin, like an ice skaters skate blade.

Michael, the shipwrights of the mid-1800s looked at the Dutch boats and the cradles they used to sail their cargo boats on the frozen Hudson River and decided that the ribs and planking were not essential.  Their desire was to build a boat suitable for racing on the ice in winter and they were mostly financed by the families of America's Gilded Age, e.g., Roosevelt, Vanderbilt, Astor, Livingston, etc. whose homes lined the eastern shore of the Hudson,.

The rigging on this ice yacht was quite challenging especially the blocks controlling the boom.

Snow in October?  Lucky you, I guess ;) We have had nothing but rain for the last two weeks.

You most definitely will.  It was also at this year's conference as a work in progress.

I will be taking it to our Hudson River Ice Yacht Club winter meeting in December also. I'll post pictures here later.

Jack, just came across this article doing a search on  "ROCKET".  You  realy captured the essence of ROCKET in your model.  The Rocket Ice Yacht Foundation thanks you for your efforts, beautifully done!

Nice Job! Reminds me that there is a lot more to modeling than hull planks and photoetch.....

Excellent subject and execution of it...

Well done...
