Evening all,     thank you all  for the likes and views,  its great being back in this section,    right  -  I  decided to attack the ladder rails that go around the deck cut out,  I decided to use the kit parts as they are fairly well formed,  I also attached the ladder rope that comes up from lower down, this was tied and glued with a bit of pva.

Evening all   - another good  day  doing bits and pieces,  I started by trimming the ladder rope that had been attached,   I then painted the rope and simulated rope in a dirty sand color and the posts the same brown/black color,   I then painted and fitted the forecastle deck grating,  and also constructed a grating to cover the mid ships ladder hatchway.

Runnin' start mate ... as usual you're hard to keep up with (especially as I'm getting slow ;) ). Deck looks rather spiffy ... maybe for a future build you could try your hand at pastels on top of the washes ... easier to "smudge" I found at my previous destroyer's decks. handrails turned out nice 'n woody-ish ... keep it up

Thanks mate,   I have never used pastels - I always seem to work by the slowly slowly ethic  when it comes to trying new techniques.

Great work OC. Nice to see you moving along so well.

Dumb question I suppose but shouldn't the combings around hatches and stuff on the deck be raised by the same amount as the thickness of your planks? They look a little odd to me being flush with the deck.

Not sure how that would work on the actual ship  as the  ladder hatch grating was just a temporary cover - put in place with the hand rail/ropes removed  for action stations I assume,  its only lightly glued so it can be popped out from under and a slight combing added, what I could do is to build a frame around the grating and sit it ontop of the lip so its raised a couple of mm.

That couple of mm would raise it about the same as it would have been above the original plastic deck before you added the wood. The same would apply to the other deck openings. It would seem that they all should have at least a short combing around them to at least make an edge that could hold a canvas cover in foul weather and stop some of the water from flooding the below decks.

Thanks lou,   I've lifted it now (it was bugging me so I went downstairs and popped it from underneath - no damage)  I will build a frame 2x2mm  tomorrow  (after my aicraft spotting and photography from the back garden - of course)    and fit it around the grating  - like I did on my Greyhound build  - I just wasn't thinking  - brains gone to sleep I think.

Evening all,   so I got a few hours on the pearl  after a day of aircraft spotting and photography,   any way  the  ladder hatchway  was re done using some 2x2mm framing - I decided to attach the frame to the deck that way it leaves a slight gap between the grating and frame, this inspired me to then construct some combing around the hatchway with the ladder already open, this was tricky as I had the rope stachions to cut around, I did this by making the combing in three sections, and filing a cut out with my fine needle files (think I used my 2mm box file).

After these combings had set I applied a couple of coats of the fadded black/grey paint.

I then turned my attention to the main gratings section - this is a kit part in plastic, but it looked a little narrow and flat compared to the others, so I boxed it in with the same 2x2mm  and set it aside to set.

Here are a few pics of the progress  -

Good evening all,      firstly thank you all for the likes and comments  - I had another good day on the pearl  I started bt painting the main grating, then I glued it down and set it aside to set,   then I turned my attention to the poop deck  firstly I constructed a section of grating for the wheel to sit on, then I boxed it in, before fixing it down I cut a square opening through the deck for the wheel/rudder control ropes to go through the deck,  then I glued the grating down and gave it a couple of coats of paint.

I also decided to modify the captains cabin roof skylight as the kit molded sides are flat and not angled,   I got around this by sanding the top till I created a slope,   right here goes a little bit of my immagination  - I decided to try to create the illusion of candle light inside the cabin using a mix of orangy/yellow/red paints - the idea was to attach some clear plastic glued under the deck, this I painted the colors to (on the underside of the clear plastic)  I also added some more clear plastic under the skylight top frame (acting as windows)  the idea was  looking through two sections of clear plastic should mimic dappled coloured light.

So here are a few pics showing my ideas.

Another job for tomorrow  -  I might play around with hazing the skylight windows abit more, by dropping in some pva with a tiny amount of yellow paint,     just to give them that aged look and to make the view through them slightly less  - making the candle glow paintwork more realistic.

Nice ... one remark though, candles have that orange, yellow ochre, whitish yellow gradient. Red(dish) would be, especially working at a small scale, to dark

Cheers

I added the pva in the window panes  and it seems to have done the trick  - made the lighting impression more subtle.

Evening all,  another good day on the pearl today - I started work on the wheel and assembly,  the kit version is good shape and all I needed to do was to shape the frame work, after doing this I gave it a couple of coats of paint then weathered it slightly, then I attached the wheel to rudder rope - this was wrapped around the spindle then secured with pva with both ends weighted down to keep it in place.

Then I attached an anchor point underneath the deck with a piece of 1x1mm, then I pused the rope ends through the grating and glued the wheel assembly in place, when set I will secure the ropes around the anchor point.
