According to dutch tradition – total absence of straight lines.

Yes, this absence of straight lines for reference would be a real challenge for a cartesian mind and hand like mine ... quite strange actually in a country that was dominated by rational thinking and calvinist religion.

Although: most working ships tend to be rather box-like: the main frame of a tjalk, fluit or aak, all tend to be rather square.

and it is a mis-conception that dutch calvinists did not like beautifull (and expensive) stuff. Quite a lot of expensive houses around.....

Сalking of the joints of the finishing covering of the deck-house roof had to be made out of thin rods of black hornbeam. Since the bending had to be made in place, the former technology was not suitable.

The impression I get is among this community of builders, wood bending is the standard by which skill is measured, so he who can do more bends and more difficult bends than the other guy, wins. So we have parts like the cabin roof bent into multiple smooth curves for no functional reason, and a hull shape that is closing in on being a circle

it seems for some most of life is defined as a contest, others just like pleasing lines ... a certain flow. I particularly like the cabin's roof as it breaks the rigid lines of the caulked planks
