Hi guys,

Thanks a lot for your feedback. Planking was never job for me. I was always in hurry and that is bad. This time I try to 5x messure and than glue.... . Think it pays off. Thanks a lot for following my progress. Ship modeling never dies🍻 it is not for everybody, but for the people who got  patience and love wood.,.....I'm So glad I studied EN and became member of this community. Thanks for having me guys!

Few more layers of planks but before I can continue towards the keel it is needed to build the transom. It is build from several pieces and the shaping is necessary. Unfortunately to have a smooth transition between planks and transom I had to sacrificed laser cut nails at the stern. Anyway I had an idea how to renew them, hope it will work but that I leave until the hull is fully planked. The transom looks very nice!

To restore the nails, you can use a hollow needle from a medical syringe of adequate size. Just make its end flat.

Hi, that was exactly my idea. Thanks!

Peta,

maybe this comment is too late since your hull has already been completely planked, but I found that it is a lot easier to glue these thin planks using PVA glue and hot iron (really makes it super easy + you can unlgue and reglue planks if needed). Here is my description of the procedure:

Hope this helps!

Hi Etsinko,

Interesting technique, Just this morning I was preparing the wales and thought it would be hard to glue and do not mess the surranding planks with glue residual. This might solve my problem. I will for sure try out. Thanks.

So far I use only PVA glue for planking and sometimes superglue where the plank did not stick 100% (which would be not possible using for wales).

Hi Peta_V,

The beauty of this method is that no superglue is required. I really takes a few seconds for melted PVA to become solid. And on top of that you can melt it again with hot iron if you need to adjust your planks.

Sounds very good! 👌

Today I finished the wales and started finishing the taffrel with counter. This is propably most dificult part of the ship.

First you have to cut the correct shape to wales so the counter fits without gaps. Second you have to shape the counter so it meets flush with the wales. Third the edge of the tafrel and counter can be planked. It is not easy 🙄I glued all the parts of rail but it needs a lot of sending still.

After one layer of oil. The surface looks very nice and it is very smooth IMG_20190708_124536.thumb.jpg.03b940488b77a5bc37b258bca9c6ccc3.jpgIMG_20190708_124550.thumb.jpg.628df151bcd696371078caca3bdd3f6b.jpg

Before instalation of the bulwark rails I had to clean and smooth the gunports and oar ports

IMG_20190708_205502.thumb.jpg.22afae345e93c495f7d8d5408eb115fa.jpg

The rail is made from 2 layers and each layer has 3 pieces of black wood. Again everything fits perfect which I guess should not surprise me anymore :)

Tafrel is after 2 layers of oil and I added the decoration. First I have blackend it and then gave it a send with 1500 grit Sand paper so the brass re-appear in the pronounced areas

@Peta_V

You seem to be having great fun and I hate to be a nag but somebody has to be an adult and remind you that the Royal Caroline is not going to rig itself! 😁

More seriously, you are doing an excellent job with this kit and doing a great service to Master Korabel but something similar can be said with your Royal Caroline build.

P.S. These comments are very ironic coming from someone who has not completed a build in more than 30 years....

@DPK

Hi mate,

I have noticed something what I would improve. I have described it to the colleague Who is building AVOS and is not too far for this.

Perhaps it is something you might be interested in?

Thanks

Bowsprit. It is carved from square stock. Lot of sanding again.

I had to enlarge the hole in the bow to meet the dimension of the bowsprit. It took me while to get the right dimension and also right direction as bow sprit has to go through 3 holes that needs to be aligned.

Once all is aligned the bowsprit can go through the bitt - > to the hole in the bow - > to the bowsprit yoke on the stem

To its final position

Quite a task I have to admit. Still I think I need to adjust the height of the bitt as the bowsprit points litlle bit down!

About the ports.

From the technical point of view everything is quite correct: on real ships planking is done from one type of wood; frames and inner structure from the other (for example pine for planks, oak for frames). And the frames and planks' butts are seen in the ports, as it should be.

Personally I see no reason replacing the frames' color with the same color as planking, as they should be different. If you do not like the plywood color it is better to paint or treat it to change the color. Also, as an option, the whole port can be painted. It is up to the builder.

I would like to mention, that this is not a very easy ship to build, especially compared to other our kits. @Peta_V is doing good job, it is not easy to follow his quality of the build, it just seems very easy. For example some people have troubles aligning the top-timbers following the ports on finishing planking. And if we cut that top-timbers and replace parts of them with other material, it will complicate things even more. So please be careful with what you are doing and think ahead!

@DPK I completely got your point and agree. The complexity of the build is quite high and it is more and more dificult once I'm coming to the details.

I have one more question.... It is on more placnes but now I'm about to finish latrine and they have knobs, if I rememder correctly the number it should be 44 and 45 from photo etched plate. Both are full circles. It is meant to cut one circle and solder again or how should I progress There? If I do solder I would use the rounded wire instead of that part. Thanks for the advice!

Btw thanks a lot about compliment regarding the build. Much appreciated!

Second bulwark rail in place, it needs the final sending still. I have started planking the deck furniture. First latrine under the planks.

Glueing things together. I have finished the planking of the latrines so now it is time to glue the taffrel and counter to the hull. I have also glued and smoothend the stem, keel, false keel and stern-post. IMG_20190715_163426.thumb.jpg.ec0528cfd5ff80fb5f233c35c7e6d5d9.jpgIMG_20190715_163512.thumb.jpg.079acd6ad77f2d6af8e850309a3a3d17.jpgIMG_20190715_163257.thumb.jpg.af426a0cbe3875ad185853d527a9afe2.jpgIMG_20190715_163353.thumb.jpg.7cff17db87c9b59d121626af81aefaf1.jpgIMG_20190715_163316.thumb.jpg.7458dd320b94eb047e085ecb33e3c317.jpgIMG_20190715_163305.thumb.jpg.532b13111e95aa22a164ca4b5a14846c.jpg
