What are you using for the ribs???

I'm using the supplied 1/32"x1/32" basswood strips. They definitely need some care when bending them to avoid creases or snapping them

Thank you Thomas and Steven for the compliments!

Today I finished installing the floorboards. These things really transformed the look of the boat. They were a bit tricky to glue because of the curves and bends. I used CA glue on the ends and the wood glue in the middle.

You are very correct on bending the ribs but the finished job looks great. Very nice spacings and the floorboards look extremely nice. Great job. Just a note I started to work on the longboat as a break and hadn't dry fit the furnished stem, keel and sternpost only to discover that i'd not shaped the bow in the radius of the furnished stem. So to fix the problem I used Sculpey to copy the bottom and used it as a pattern to make my own stem, keel and sternpost. I'll post the results when finished.

Beautiful job.

Stay well and stay safe

Thanks so much Will! I think others also had the same issue with the laser cut parts. I still have to dry fit mine to see if it fits, otherwise I plan to scratch my own ones

Some more progress with the longboat, I installed the gratings, thwart supports and thwarts. The supports were again a bit tricky to install, and had to use CA glue in some spots

Thanks so much for the encouraging words Thomas and Bob!

The windlass has been carved and installed. And I also painted the top section black before I stick the moulding strip

Beautiful work!  I’m amazed you were able to sand the shell so thin. I was terrified of going through!

There was one spot where I sanded it too much and could sense it would flake if I put a bit pressure. But now after painting and adding all the details it should be ok! 😁

I finished with the cap rail. The laser cut one did not fit well, so had to scratch it from a sheet of basswood:

20201218_212137.thumb.jpg.fe7faba099ef055b8e84e1f804ab0f47.jpg

Next I'll be cutting out the keel, stem, and stern posts since the laser cut ones also don't fit nice

EDIT: I realize I may have to thin down the cap rail a bit more. I'll try and will post additional photos

I sanded the cap rail a bit. I don't think I can go any more thinner than this

Longboat is almost done. I finished cutting out the keel, stem and sternpost from a basswood sheet. I also painted the rudder:

20201219_192851.thumb.jpg.e89d2c140775e1c619af29451005f280.jpg

I pre-bent the molding strip prior to installation. It was still very tricky to glue it and used CA glue in many parts for a quick set. I just hope it doesn't break apart after some time 😅.... It needed some intense bends especially at the bow...

Well done.  The ship’s boats are a bigger challenge building than the ship, you’ve done a really nice job with it.

Glenn

Thank you so much for the nice comments!! It's very much appreciated. Also, thanks all for leaving the likes and looking in! It really motivates me to do better! 😄

Slowly approaching the finish line for the longboat... The knees, bowsprit step, and splash guard have been installed. For the knees I cut out triangular pieces which were then shaped with a round needle file..

Only thing next are the gudgeons and pintles, oarlocks, shaping the tiller, and the oars themselves (which I am hoping to complete for my next post). So yes, lots left to do 😅
