Just now catching up, Denis.  The rigging is spectacular. You're not going to let a small thing like 4 missing cleats stop you now are you?   (No pressure... nope.. not from anyone here. )

Hi Denis and Vince,

Thanks to both of you for sharing your expertise through your build-logs and personal advice. Each of you have saved me from making errors, and I really appreciate it. Your Sovereigns are both beautiful, and I only hope that I can come somewhat close to the skills and knowledge that you each have shown.

Over the coming months, and perhaps even years, I will continue to visit your build-logs for direction and inspiration.

Hi Denis

Only just came upon your log. Great work and amazing - amazing! - rigging. Ratlines aside the rigging between the sprit and foremast does my head in just looking at it...Incredible.

Hi Alistair

Thank you for looking in on my log.

Ratlines I just cannot do for the life of me.

Just doing the ratlines on the main mast ( and they are rubbish again ).

Don't be a stranger on the log as all comments are welcome ( good or bad ).

Again thank you for your comments.

I'm no expert on ratlines...but I used self-closing tweezers to keep the shrouds aligned and stop any hourglass effects - and then used a backing template with the distances marked. I didn't do clove hitches, just really simple overhand knots with a dab of PVA to thicken the knot a little and a dab of CA at the outer shrouds to totally secure. At any scale an overhand knot with a bit of glue to thicken does the part I reckon. Don't let the rats get you down!

steady as she goes Den.......don't be worried about those knots.  I'm not an knot expert either.  one of these days,  you'll do them without even trying.........but for now,  just do what you know.   your doing fine!!    just set up a mock mast with a few shrouds and practice  :)

Hi All

Well another attempt at the ratlines this time on the main mast.

When I get to the mizzen they may look OK :) :) :).

Hi All

Thank you Popeye and all for your support on my build of the SOS.

I have finished all the blocks and rigging on the main mast and yards etc.

I have also done the setting out of the sails tonight, tomorrow I will start to stich ( sow ) them all up.

I will do anything to keep me away from doing ratlines :D :D :D :D.

Denis.

Hi Popeye

It's not the first time I have painted myself into a corner :D:angry::o.

I have decided to put all the yards and sails on the main mast like I did with the foremast, but will leave the main yard off till it's glued into the deck, then do the bottom shrouds and ratlines after that is done I will fit the lower main yard and sail..

Hi All

I forgot to add this

I have got some fabric stiffener , I am experimenting with it so I can get the flags to look like they are blowing in the wind.

I have to cut some plastic tubes up first for a mould before I do the flags.

cool idea with the flags...........I've been just painting them with diluted white glue and toss'in 'em on something wavy  ;)   {just kidding}....I shape them before they are dry

Hi Dennis,

If the fabric stiffener doesn't work, (I'm guessing it's starch?)  There's always hair spray, clear matte lacquer, or what Popeye suggested.  I use the glue and water mix with success.  Also, take an empty beer or soda can (aluminium/aluminum) and cut it open and shape to the way you want to flag to flutter.  Lay the flag on the can and coat with the stiffener that works best.  When dry, the flag will come off in the same shape as the can.

Hi Mark

I have tried the fabric stiffener on some polyester that the wife got me so I could experiment with it, and it worked out very well.

I think the flags that I had made are polyester, but not sure what ink or paint they used.

The fabric stiffener did not leave any staining at all.

I just love the idea about the beer cans ( will go out tomorrow and get 2 dozen ) well you have to experiment with the shape do you not ??  :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D and there are 5 flags.

Joking apart it's a very good idea , thank you Mark.

Now I know why Model Ship World is the best forum for model ship building.

With people like your self and others passing on what you have all learnt over the years to people like me, thank you all.

I was going to mention the spray starches and hair sprays...........but I have never tried them,  and can't attest to the results.   I like the diluted white glue,  because it seals up the edges as well and reduces fraying.   if you have reef lines,  they can be treated as well.

I wouldn't leave yourself out Den.........you've come to the table with some very nice methods as well ;)     just makes us one big happy family!  :)

Hi All

Cut the beer can up and bent it to the shape I wanted, put the flag on and coated it with the fabric stiffener, left it over night.

Took it of today and it just went flat    .

Put it back on and coated it up with diluted PVA wood glue, left it for 4 hours and coated it up again.

Will see what happens tomorrow.

If I don't post a photo you will know I have hung myself ha ha.

Denis.
