HM Cutter Cheerful 1806 by PRS - FINISHED - Syren Ship Model Company - 1/48

Recommended Posts

Paul,

LOVE your workmanship!   One of the things that jumped out for me is the deck planking.  So many kits have the butts alternating every other strake which never happened in reality.  Yours is done correctly and VERY nicely.

Cheers

You're on the right track for the belaying pins. I did mine for the Syren a while back and now that they're on the model Im very glad I took the time and effort.

I used Thomas Gahms method and he was most helpful to getting me started. His method is explained in his Syren log page 8 post #218 and up. His suggestion I used most was to keep a drawing of the shape you want right in front of your work area for instance reference.

Current Build:

Erycina 1882 Fishing Trawler by Vanguard Models 1:64 scale

Syren by pearwill Model Shipways 1:64 scale

On Hold:

HM Cutter Cheerful  Syren Shipmodel Scratch 1:48 scale

1776 Washington Row Galley scratch scratch from NRG plans #121  1:48 scale

Completed Build:

Charles W. Morgan by Artesania Latina circa 1988, Lowell Grand Banks Dory 1:24 scale by Model Shipways, Norwegian.Sailing Pram 1:12 scale by Model Shipways, Muscongus Bay Lobster Smack 1:24 scale by Model Shipways

I looked it up and also took a look at a lot of photos so redid the shape so it looks more realistic.

I have 22 made and not sure if I need more but wanted to make sure I hade the hole size correct for the pin rails before I made them.

I'm not sure if I want to treenail

I’m not a fan of tree nailing, in fact it was Chuck that convinced me not to.  He doesn’t do it on Winnie. However it’s the modelers choice, whatever you like.

Glenn,

I agree on not tree nailing for scales of 1:64 and smaller.  For 1:48 and larger, it is not difficult to make trennals to scale for the hull planking using bamboo and a drawplate.  (I have never been able to make them consistently to scale with any other wood species with the plate or  drilling cores or  other methods.)    For the hull,  at 1:48, a 1" to 1.25"  trennal is 0.02 to  0.026" diameter which can be easily done with bamboo on a good quality draw plate.  Even so, making the required 10,000 tree nails is no small task.   For deck planks,   a good motto might be that  when in doubt leave it out.   The treenails were covered and not visible, but if the model builder wants them to be seen, the scale needed even for 1:48 would be very difficult to achieve.   The  majority of models we see with tree nailed decks look like they have a case of the measles or chickenpox because of the scale issue.

Working my way slowly through some of the deck fittings.

I have the pumps ready for mounting.

PXL_20210808_185114232.thumb.jpg.ecefff8cdf75f3dadfefa364b0c15a43.jpg

Also spent a few hours making the winch and it is ready for painting.

I didn't make a gear for the winch but will paint the part where it would be black. This was pretty fun to figure out how to make it and build.

Once I paint this and the seats of ease I will let them set up for a while before handling them.

Guess my next step will be the catheads.

I searched for 30 minutes for the post you referenced about Thomas Gahms with no luck.   I put in Thomas Gahms in the  search box and nothing came up except your own posts. The search system is not always easy to use so sorry for asking but could you  post the specific URL.   No doubt my lack of computer skills is the issue, but would appreciate your help none-the-less.

So who needs a lathe when you have a dremel and sort of steady hand :)

Once I have the mast made I will finish the hole sizing.

Thanks everyone.

This is actually a fun build and wish I didn't have to work.

Anyway here is a free tip for painting small parts.

Use the top of a pill bottle and the squash some tinfoil into it to make a small reservoir for mixing the paint and thinner.

When you are done just remove and discard the tinfoil and you are ready to go and cleaned up.

Hey thanks Glen.

I needed to drill the holes for the eyebolts for the guns and tried a few different ideas so the drill wouldn't go all the way through and then I came up with a simple solution.

Drill through an eraser and then trim it off after it is stuck through and then you have a drill depth gauge that won't mark up the paint.

The rope coil size isnt bad (maybe a tad smaller) but the color is way too bright and light.  They dont all have to be the exact same size either.   It looks almost white.  The rope looks a bit heavy for those as well.  See below.

I mixed 3 rope sizes on mine and intentionally varied the length, varied the coils between 4-6, then made them a bit messy on top of that.

I agree with Chuck, that rope is very white.

well you asked 😁

Thanks.

I can see that making rope coils is going to be a skill I need to improve.

Sorry for the one word post above. I was super tired and just wanted to go to bed.

I spent a lot of time and wasted way too much rope trying to fill the ship with coils I liked.

Decided to mix it up and tackle the anchor mini kit.

The parts fit was good and I left this part to dry overnight.

PXL_20210816_003513485.thumb.jpg.e8cd73901129e24831676e7941769b72.jpg

Then cleaned them up and sanded ready for the straps.

PXL_20210816_235948688.thumb.jpg.fcccb7bc1a2e36cb824ac7f24dd52daa.jpg

To make the straps I used the pink 3m painters tape and cut 2mm strips and removed every other one so the paint will go to the edge. I tried regular masking tape and the blue tape but the pink was the smoothest.

PXL_20210816_235932447.thumb.jpg.04def79328d836402a3d31fe4250fcc7.jpg

Wrapped and glued the straps on with the tiniest dab of super glue.

PXL_20210817_002035330.thumb.jpg.d300fabacb53790482e524e3e34b11b7.jpg

Then made up some dark brown rope and spent some time wrapping the rings. Wasn't hard to do just time consuming.

PXL_20210817_150126019.thumb.jpg.7064166412fdde7d60061aa631d2feaa.jpg

Then once they were wrapped I roughed up the buoys and painted them black after filling the holes with toothpicks

PXL_20210816_003521879.thumb.jpg.d5ca1f214332e98ff8a50a0cf468e840.jpg

Then did the rigging on them and that was fun trying to get it all to look right but it was worth it in the end.

I used a bit of my weathering pencils on the anchors and like the way it looks.

I haven't built my first pair of anchors yet, but in all the build logs I've read, for their anchors they glue the two pieces of the stock together without the shank in between.  Then they drill a hole in the combined piece to fit the shank in.  The technique does not leave showing the gap between the two pieces of stock that your solution does.  Question: Is there an intention in doing it the way your are?  Just asking.  Beautiful work on the Cheerful so far.

Yes the gap has to be there according to the instructions. The air gap is to keep the wood from rotting in the real world.

Shaped the scuppers on the outside but have not done them yet from the inside. Not sure how they are supposed to look on the inner part of the hull as to whether they are even with the deck or cut into the deck a bit.

Also finished the tiller and mounted the rudder. The tiller is press fit so I can remove the rudder if necessary later.
