1921 Bluenose by John Ruy - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1/64 scale - Canadian Fishing Schooner

There is a slight noticeable difference in the lids/covers this time, John.  Great job!  May try to steal this idea.

Thanks I’m noticing the hardwood sheets (Cherrywood) make for more consistent staining, than basswood.

You are welcome to incorporate any ideas, they may or may not have been my ideas to begin with. 😆

Looking very nice. What is the blue cutter in the photos? I haven't seen one before

Bill

Wood strip cutter.  Not sure where John got his, but MicroMark (for example) sells them, as well.

@GGibson Thanks for the reminder, I nearly forgot to place this small but important detail. I used 1/32” Mahogany,  only because I didn’t have the 1/64” material in a hardwood. I think we can overlook the over scale on this one, just this once. 😆

Deck Furnishings complete…

Although my goal was realism in the storage of 16 oars and 20 Thwarts in the top Dory, which I believe I achieved, I don’t like the look.

IMG_2685.thumb.jpeg.b3c13dfc798c0451895165b9909cb137.jpeg
So, I have opted to place 8 oars neatly laid out in the top Dory on each side. I think it’s a much better presentation.

The Deck is complete, just over a year since I started this project. It was July 18 2022 when I opened the box. I estimate 600 hours a year based on my first build where I actually tracked my hours. 😆

Ahhh, I'm paying serious attention to your metalwork!  I am not good at this.

Hey. I love your desktop vise!  I assume the base is super heavy in order for it to stay in one spot while tugging while clamping and tugging?  Mine is fairly mobile and handy, but my wife would love seeing another front porch delivery dropoff!  Where did you get yours? A new tool!

I’m not either, but I’m getting better at it. Takes practice this model will definitely give you the opportunity to practice. Took me several attempts and hours to get what you see here. You need the right tools. 👍

Thanks for that info!  Truth be told, though, the UPS and Fed Ex deliveries are outnumbering the other guy... <shrug>

BTW… the base is not heavy. It would need to be screwed down if you want to tug on it.

Ahhh, ok.  Thanks.  I'll stick with what I am using then.  Watching all your rigging and above deck work with bated breath... or, since the Bluenose is a fishing vessel, perhaps it should be baited breath... <shrug> 👍

Hello John

It's taken me way too long (shamefully long) to look through your build log - just did that this evening and WOW - no short cuts for you, huh? Some incredible work here - the bow works (windlass, etc.) look great and the finish on the deck superstructures is really nice. Those dory jigs have confounded me for months now...I had a go at making one, but lacked the patience to work with that thing - seeing you go through it has now inspired me to have another go....wonderful work!

3/16” Drill bit

Hi John.

Is the 3/16” drill bit used to hold the ring for drilling a hole into the ring?

Thanks for showing how it’s done.

Hi Rich, thanks for your comment. The shank of the 3/16” drill bit was used to bend the flat brass strip into the shape of a ring with a 3/16” inside diameter to fit the fore mast top. The .9 mm hole is drilled after soldering the rings together.

I got the two photos out of proper sequence. My apologies…

I’ll fix the sequence and hope that answers your question.

Thanks for your comments Hamilton, you are right, no shortcuts to this hobby🤪. It just takes practice and time. I have plenty of time, I had no idea what kind of detail was involved with this particular kit. Got to Love it…

Take your time on those Dories, it’s worth it. You don’t have to do all eight, unless you need the practice. 😂

Mast Hoops…

These need to be prepared and added to the mast “before” the trestle trees are built. If you forget…

IMG_2727.thumb.jpeg.3ad285f61f17a714e59d2dffa19bdcca.jpeg
Immediately, I noticed these were not your typical laser cut parts.

IMG_2732.thumb.jpeg.58df8b60894d97362df594fe21119ee9.jpeg
The laser did not cut through the bottom ply. This made for very tedious cutting and several broken blades. 😣

IMG_2728.thumb.jpeg.5ce4e05ee682caf5e19f0280e79b0aaa.jpegIMG_2729.thumb.jpeg.a0a283df7f20bb1016ecc608b0f1ebb1.jpegIMG_2733.thumb.jpeg.0a3c854ce598eff802aef34d285ff88c.jpeg
The small hoops were fine, popped right out. 😆

IMG_2737.thumb.jpeg.a14ccd9d0b9a40cbd8b910e003c62dd3.jpeg
After sanding and staining the hoops are ready to go.

Nice work, John! Totally impressed with (and envious of) your solder work.  Need to do a ton of practice (and have patience) when I get to this stage.
