Once again I thought I had made matters worse. It is very blue until it is completely dry and then just seems to shade the greys. I think it looks quite reasonable now for a well worn vessel. I think I will press on with some rust washes around the hatches and fittings. I'll be missing for a couple of weeks now. I'm heading over for a family holiday in the North Wales and then for a different rainy location in the English Lake District then a side tour to see a bit of history in Berlin and Warsaw -. Not to mention Cumberland sausage, Kielbasa and currywurst oh and maybe the occasional beer. I will look again at the X craft when I get back and see if I still like the appearance. clearway Posted November 2, 2022 Share #33 Posted November 2, 2022 (edited) well as a resident of west cumbria (home of scafel pike- pronounced scawfell locally) i can vouch the lake district is officially the wettest place in england (Seathwaite in Borrowdale to be precise) - best cumberland (and only really true) sausage is found between Keswick/ Whitehaven/ Workington and Waberthwaite near Ravenglass. Avoid Windermere it is too commercialised and highly recommend a trip on the La'al Ratty 8 mile long narrow gauge railway- oh and the filter really brought the greys together- looks awesome😁. and no i don't work for the lake district tourist board😜. I also have happy memories of sunny days on Jack's Rake and the Girdle Traverse. I'll be with my 97 year old dad so there won't too much of that. Maybe a walk along Goldwater or Coniston. I actually arrived home early last week but it seemed to take a long time to get back into the routines of home and of course Thanksgiving was a diversion too. A hugely enjoyable trip to North Wales (raining), the English Lake District (raining) then a flight to Warsaw (raining) and the train to Berlin (snowing). Walked miles, saw lots, ate curry wurst and drank beer. The cats seem to have made little progress with the X craft so I'm picking it back up. After three weeks absence I think I like the weathered effect so the build moves forward to the last details. There is an oddity in the kit with the saddle mines. There are brackets on the saddle mines And there are clevises provided but no suggestion of how this is going to go together. From the few photos of the area that I have found I think there are cables that attach to the clevises and fit round the feature in the hull of the submarine. I think these are the retailing cables for the mines and are released from the submarine by winding a handle inside the hull. It occurs to me that the mines would need to be released with the submarine firmly sat on the bottom. Otherwise releasing one of the two ton mines anything less than completely simultaneously would produce a pretty smart roll. I threaded the clevises onto some 0.5 mm stretch thread and fitted them around the hull feature. Painted, I think they look the part The next task was to improve the propellor. The Eduard PE set provides a set of brass blades which have to be rolled to shape and then fitted to the hub after removing the nasty plastic ones. It was all a bit of luck and judgment getting it right but it eventually came out reasnably and is an improvement on the kit part. It looked better after painting matt black and then dry brushed with Mig acrylic brass The fragile parts, air induction, compass and periscopes were added and weathered After a coat of gloss I used a rust wash around the hatches, the hull drains and detail areas. A matt coat will be added next and after adding the prop the hull is complete. king derelict Posted December 6, 2022 Author Share #45 Posted December 6, 2022 The sub got a matt coat sprayed on and I think that can be considered done so I turned my attention to the base. I am trying a variation on the base I used for the Seehund. So the usual closed cell foam and matt board base with a coat of gesso brushed on. I made some rock outcrops by pouring plaster of Paris into crumpled kitchen foil and then set them on the base with a thin layer of plaster of Paris which also added some undulations to the mud / sand areas. I gave it all another coat of gesso When it had all dried I painted the rocks with very light grey and added white highlights. I'm using craft acrylics for the base. They give good coverage and are much cheaper than the model acrylics. The mud and sand area got painted with a beige / yellow / white mix and some darker shading added in places I'll work up some detail around the rocks once its dry. There is a 1/4 inch hole in the central rock outcrop to accommodate the clear acrylic rod that will support the model. The hole goes down to the bottom of the base and should support the model securely. Thanks for looking in, the likes and the comments. It was too light and bright and the colours didn't blend well enough. So loaded the air brush with a very dilute black wash and worked the base over trying to soften the interface between he rocks and the mud and generally to subdue and darken the base. I'm a lot happier with it now. I had thought of adding the sand powder as I used for the Seehund base but that will lighten things up a bit so I think I will leave well alone. The acrylic rod was cut to length and dry fitted. The model sits nicely on it so this is the intent of the display. The edges of the base need to be painted and a case needs to be made but I think we are getting close to the finish of this one. Thanks for looking in and the likes. Hi Ian I was thinking about adding some marine life. A frogman would put the size in context. I'll go and look what is available out there for a 1/35 diver. I think you are right although I think they were not free swimming in the sense of a frogman with fins. One of the four man crew was a diver and there was a wet / dry compartment in the submarine to allow the diver to exit from the forward hatch underwater. He had the delightful job of standing on the fore deck and cutting through the anti=submarine netting while the submarine pressed against the netting to give him a platform to work from. That must have felt extremely exposed; I mean its not as if anything could go wrong! Hi Roger No I think they were free divers but without flippers. An exposure suit in effect, hood and mask and a rebreather set for air (well, oxygen really). As far as I know they were not tethered to the sub. It must have been lonely out there. The crew in the sub could not have seen or helped the diver once outside.
