More planking progress:-

As you can see below this is the 8th row (and final row) of parallel planks.

DSC02667.thumb.JPG.6a0bad6b27363bd349ee18124d185ac4.JPG

I decided to do a bit of measuring. Firstly I placed a pins, equi-spaced from the keel, about 1/6 of the length from bow and stern. Between these pins I stretched a taught line. I then used this line to place a series of additional pins.

DSC02671.thumb.JPG.19c1a4ba6eb1e2c186c891e0f50d83fc.JPG

DSC02674.thumb.JPG.971e51945c38ddceb345c75de673b098.JPG

I then measured the curved distance between the line and the 8th plank at 3 positions - front pin, maximum beam and rear pin. I then worked out the ratios of the measured distances.

At the front pin the length was half the length at maximum beam, so I concluded that the planks needed to be tapered to half width towards the bow.

DSC02675.thumb.JPG.9b3a4cd36ea231ac58d00a26c4d33f92.JPG

At the rear pin the curved distance was circa 2/3 the measurement at maximum beam and hence I concluded that the planks needed to taper to 2/3 of their width at the stern.

DSC02676.thumb.JPG.3ee7e628e4c91761c1eb29441dc65601.JPG

Before continuing with taper planking I decided to reinforce the planks in the area of the engine room. The engine room interior walls appear to be steel (inner surface of hull plates). I therefore needed to hide the planks anyway. The interior side of the planks can just be seen in the next shot.

DSC02677.thumb.JPG.c5d9991ebd89b95b74e8f53abcf7effd.JPG

DSC02678.thumb.JPG.8aa08dd62b30154511d60486b66895e3.JPG

I cut strips of 1/32" ply to fit between the frames.

DSC02679.thumb.JPG.1d2ce7f6dd23a2f44fbf8280dbd42e30.JPG

DSC02680.thumb.JPG.8e55a9c50ba47f8f192d5c618bca90b4.JPG

Having cut all the ply strips they were glued in place using PVA glue.

DSC02683.thumb.JPG.eb995c7461c515b885a8cc307a1fbd9f.JPG

That's all for now friends.

Thank you John and mikegr.

And so onto the taper planks. Because I want both sides of the hull symmetrical I set about making the taper planks as matched pairs. Two parallel planks were taped together using double sided sellotape.DSC02689.thumb.JPG.d9fca3cf8cd9326430e133c52ceedb0b.JPGDSC02690.thumb.JPG.f94d066be28f4283537670e3d34e2b3a.JPG

I then marked the "unshaped" edge of the joined planks so that I would retain the reference orientation of the planks on each side of the hull.DSC02693.thumb.JPG.0e7d7e2df888b69a727733270f5be6a2.JPG

The planks were then mounted in my "plank clamping vice" and the edges were reduced. It is probably not clear from the photos but a reference taper strip is glued on to the jaws of the "plank vice" so that I can follow this reference when creating the taper. Additionally the clamping vice has inch subdivisions along its length. By moving the end of the planks to different positions along the vice I can create different widths of plank. Currently I am reducing the planks to 2/3 width at the stern and 1/2 width at the bow as per the measurements in the previous post.

DSC02685.thumb.JPG.4d289bc872e0fd37e58eaf1910d4a01b.JPG

The following shots are just a sequence of taper planks going on to the hull.

DSC02686.thumb.JPG.390a371539061f97f39a1e1c037eea7c.JPGDSC02688.thumb.JPG.2f9a45ba87ad1400b60795ea7b6d42c2.JPGDSC02695.thumb.JPG.af112d4b2ffac2f0c64ae8bfbc8313b8.JPGDSC02695.thumb.JPG.af112d4b2ffac2f0c64ae8bfbc8313b8.JPG

For the moment the taper planks seem to be working and I am not having to force bend them in the width direction. Consequently I am not experiencing and "Clinkering".DSC02700.thumb.JPG.8e3b8a10239e4ce059d5d125d4f6d607.JPG

I am bevelling one edge of each plank as it goes on to the hull to keep adjacent planks abutted tightly. I did make a small tool to assist with the bevelling.

DSC02702.thumb.JPG.29e9b39658fc09307402b3c5f2378ab9.JPG

However in the end I found that it was just a easy to shape the plank edges with a small sanding block and the tool was consigned to the bin.

So it was that I progressed steady to plank 14.

DSC02704.thumb.JPG.4e73d979ede72e0e01a88ba997e4f34d.JPG

I am finding the pins on the "string" line are really convenient for storing the planks prior to fitting. You can just see one parked on the opposite side of the hull in the next photo.

Just catching up Keith, and enjoying the journey very much. I like the taper jig.

I was wondering if you will also measure the ratios from the string line to the rabbet line at the keel, to see what happens to the shape of the garboard?

Exactly so Andy. The string line is currently within 1/4" of being parallel to the keel. Close enough not to worry at the moment but I will keep an eye on it as I get closer.

Thank you John, Pat, Andy and druxey for the feedback.

A Little more planker's progress.

The tapered planks continue to go on.

DSC02705.thumb.JPG.ad5d33e7af70e66511fcf823ef9628ab.JPG

I got to the point where more 1/32" ply backing could be added behind the planks in the boiler room area.

DSC02707.thumb.JPG.91cdbf962dc05148e1d836968beee451.JPG

DSC02711.thumb.JPG.f54636f5904a5780591c7f77a274e153.JPG

As the taper planks were fitted they began to fill central section of the hull relative to the bow and stern.

DSC02712.thumb.JPG.071daef07173d33d6626ff969a23c0c7.JPG

The taper planking at the stern can be seen quite clearly in the following photo. Seven taper planks were in position at this stage.

DSC02714.thumb.JPG.11c503eed7ea2ab2e6acdde5f9e09b09.JPG

By the next photo I was starting to encroach on the area of the Skeg slot. This slot can't be closed up until I have permanently attached the skeg which I don't want to do at the moment.

DSC02716.thumb.JPG.4f9b33ec917dad94fa9541634622911d.JPG

The next photo shows how the taper planking is going at the bow.

DSC02717.thumb.JPG.5adddb32127ed7ce333b9894d8617244.JPG

At this stage I did some further checks on progress towards the string line and concluded that an additional filler plank needed to be inserted over the central section of the hull. This plank was full width at maximum beam tapering to nothing about 15" either side of maximum beam. In the next photo I have inserted a short section of full width plank at maximum beam and then temporarily installed a further long plank above this.

DSC02750.thumb.JPG.b75330ff5dbe42f79175aaf0ff870089.JPG

Then over the gap in the planks I attached a piece of paper and with some graphite I did a "rubbing" before cutting out the required plank shape as a paper template.

DSC02751.thumb.JPG.c34bfce167741f17b52c250d01844c51.JPG

I then pasted the cut out piece of paper on to a pair of planks and shaped the planks to match the paper. One of the shaped planks with the attached template can be seen inserted below.

DSC02753.thumb.JPG.9215d86e8705ed6996f770c2631d76a7.JPG

The fine tapers at either end of the inserted planks were then cut and installed.

DSC02754.thumb.JPG.6051d871f5f5c1ce8d20f151f7beb214.JPG

The next plank was then glued in place.DSC02755.thumb.JPG.b30bf857243ed51a0ed2a47061f71b74.JPG

I am now back on track with closing the gap to the string line.

Rick - I have been doing a bit of head scratching trying to locate the position of various hull appendages. From the geometry of this feature it is located near the keel on the starboard side. From the angle the keel makes with the hull it must be somewhere towards the stern. It is one of the photos you provided and I am wondering if you recall its approximate location?

For the rest of my friends please feel free to speculate on what it is and why it is this shape. Without knowing what it is It doesn't look terribly well designed to me.

Keith, Rick, Eberhard, Pat, Roel, Nils - thank you all for taking the time to comment and thanks to all my other visitors.

Perhaps it's not design, but just how it came out ... they needed an outlet or inlet and the place was dictated by the interior arrangements. And/or it was too much trouble to remove an old feature ...

The detail you're looking for, is near the starboard bow, just above the keel. You can see it on the head-on shot you posted on the first page.

No idea what it would be, but I'd guess some outlet and perhaps the sewage plant discharge straight down?

Would indeed be interesting to see the internal layout in that area.

Hi Keith,

Based on the picture evidence that the lower surface is horizontal, the sides a vertical "pipe, and of part being unpainted and the face apparently a black compound (rubber or epoxy), I believe the aft fitting of the two is a depth sounder transducer.  The fairing forward of it would appear to have been fitted to reduce turbulence or to avoid damage to the transducer, from cable/lines etc.  Hard to estimate the size from the photos but I suspect that, if it is a transducer, it will be in the 200kHz range.  Rod

Well Keith, I knew this one was coming but I've been so tied up in my 1 : 1 build I forgot all about it but I've had a quick skim through up to present and am now eagerly watching another masterpiece take shape

Thank you Steve.

And now something of a deviation.

I took a trip to Woodbridge (Suffolk) earlier today, just across the river from Sutton Hoo on the River Deben. Here a bunch of old codgers have decided to build a full sized replica of the Sutton Hoo ship using traditional methods and tools.

unnamed-14.thumb.jpg.d0253739f419980c0468a01960dce21c.jpgunnamed.thumb.jpg.ad38efd234966ebff2c96d72fc8b4998.jpgunnamed-1.thumb.jpg.ce15203e48692b6552a46729ed77da47.jpgunnamed-2.thumb.jpg.d977084061eb90ab9ec30492314b0694.jpgunnamed-3.thumb.jpg.aa28375e2d7200c40107e0764b70c6e8.jpgunnamed-4.thumb.jpg.5b71002bf23e2f63ed99dbef5d11b850.jpg

They seem to have done a decent job on draughting the plans but don't seem too good at looking after them. Reminded me of my workbench.

unnamed-30.thumb.jpg.f618f56aed23f9a653c5b3dbee0d81a7.jpgunnamed-31.thumb.jpg.9096dd891f5267f73df81717f74c68ca.jpg

They started by building a small scale replica. About 1/4 size.

unnamed-18.thumb.jpg.b1c7b49b31bbc47c24ab66653ef1b232.jpg

Then they built a full sized replica of a segment of the hull.

unnamed-19.thumb.jpg.9be556d8c895d844663a6a6000f9c1f7.jpg

Being a traditional build they are not using sawn planks - each plank is being split from the tree trunk using wedges and sledge hammer. They explained that this was quite a wasteful process - never being sure what the split would reveal or how the plank would turn out.

Keel and rai pieces:-

The planks are being shaped with axes off various types. The piece of wood hanging down just in front of the sawing horse is curved on one side to the shape the plank needs to be in the vertical direction. The shipwright is using this as a guide to hollow out one side of the board before shaping the other side to a uniform width.

The guide stick in use.

unnamed-15.thumb.jpg.eff81ebd8ac92a773f594be96acd5077.jpg

It seems that ancient shipwrights needed a good supply of clamps:-

unnamed-25.thumb.jpg.790f848a0c80998f922dfc072e792a25.jpgunnamed-35.thumb.jpg.f3fc93e324e5fe34881dac47dd21153c.jpg

My brother in law took too much of an interested so was given a demonstration of the ease with which holes are being drilled into the hull. The auger bears against the thrust plate on the chest and then apparently the heftiest shipwright available puts all his weight against the operators back while he turns the handles.

unnamed-33.thumb.jpg.7620aa8a2cabc0c52d933c1ddb02c841.jpg

The ancients were quite sophisticated when it came to health and safety at work. In these modern times we can't apparently replicate everything.

unnamed-37.thumb.jpg.de3d86bec00df275ac772e15108e1ebf.jpg

Very well worth visiting if you are ever over this way, particularly as the old codgers seem to like the diversion of talking to the public.

Somehow I haven't been aware of this project, thanks!

One process that seems to be not so in line with how they did it in the old days is the use of templates. OK, they try to replicate an existing ship. In those old days they probably strung a cord from bow to stern and used this as reference to ensure that the boat turned out symmetrical, but otherwise everything would have been shaped by eye, I think.

Would indeed be interesting to see the internal layout in that area.

Roel.

The internal plans don't show much. It seems to be located in the area of the chain locker, which in turn is below the crew sleeping cabin. My guess is that it isn't a heads outlet.

Yes Eberhard they did explain that. They commented that the original would have been built by eye. No plans and no templates, and of course no two boats the same. They are indeed using templates to assist in accurately reproducing the original.

Rod

Hi Keith,

I actually fully agree with Kuparu on this one. Hadn't thought of that before, since echosounders are normally keel mounted on big ships, but there's no space for that on this one.

The cap forward of it, is probably installed to deflect bubbles created by the bow wave, a common issue on echo sounders. On big ships, with larger drafts, there's no cap, but they are mounted more aft (relative to the bow) than on Cangarda.

Hi Keith

Thank you for the fascinating diversion, remarkable work & dedication to the process. I could see a lot of Oak, & some pine perhaps - did you find out much on the timber types being used?
