Maybe! I am still looking for the shackle.

There is a shackle on deck near the bob stay attachment bracket but it is the wrong shape. I think it is off the anchor.

Not a great deal of progress over the last week. I found some rot in a couple of external window frames and so amused myself by cutting it out and replacing it with seasoned oak. Hopefully the repair will see me out.

 

As I get nearer the keel the light at the end of the tunnel is coming into view. Just a pin prick at the moment but hopefully over the course of the next week it will start to dazzle.

I seemed to develop a bit of unwanted dip (on both sides) at the position noted by the white arrow. It wasn't very significant and I did consider leaving it to be sorted out on the garboard plank. In the end I chickened out and sorted it before progressing.

As per a previous post I aligned a plank along a run that looked about right with a short plank section acting as a spacer.

I then cut wedges to fill in the triangles. Obviously 4 required - 2 per side.

This corrected the dip and set me up with a fairly simple job of planking toward the keel with minimal tapering.

I then moved on to sorting out the mahogany block int he area of the skeg. The rough carving was done with a 3/8" chisel.

I needed some round sanding sticks to sort out the concave areas. I improvised these by sticking some small Dremel type sanding drums on to a piece of dowel and a pencil. 

In the next Photo I am progressing with the shaping.

The planks at the bow are also starting to encroach on the bottom of the keel. I am not expecting any significant issues with planking in this area (famous last words).

The next shot show the skeg slot fairing into the prop tube. Still a lot of fine shaping required in this area.

I then started to build up the planking above the prop tube.

The garboard plank is becoming a tangible objective.

But first more work around the prop tube.

The mild steel plug in the prop tube is a temporary sanding guide.

Once again that's all for the moment folks.

Gin, I am afraid Andy. I started drinking Gin in my sailing days. We had a rule (oft broken) that the first gin of the day couldn't  be had before 11am. The rule was formulated without being specific about time zone. I remember quite clearly the day someone suggested that it was always after 11am somewhere in the world. We never looked back after that. Steve, one of the crew (now dearly departed) even started using gin on his tooth brush instead of boat water.

Well that's another week gone by. The weather was bad which should have assisted progress but somehow I just ended up plodding along. 

Firstly  three shots showing progress as of a week ago.

I keep doing a bit more sanding between planking runs in the hope that this will reduce the sanding marathon when the planking is complete.

A few planks later and I was at the last plank before the garboard plank.

I then put the next plank in place followed by a bit more sanding of the mahogany block insert at the skeg. This area was looking like it was shaping up well.

Then rather than fitting the garboard plank I decided to concentrate on planking over the 1/32 ply at the bulwarks. Those of you with long memories will remember that the plan was to plank over the 1/32 ply with 1/32 thick mahogany planks to bring the thickness up to 1/16" to match the planking thickness for the rest of the hull.

 

But first I had to sort out the mis-shaping of the plywood at the bow. Here is the photo reminder of the error from earlier in the build log.

Sorting the problem out involved cutting away the base board to get at the incorrectly faired frame. This allowed me to get a craft knife in to locally pare back the frame.

Also some how I hadn't quite left a 1/32 step to take the thinner bulwark planks so I took a sharp chisel to the ply to remove one lamination where it abutted the first full thickness mahogany plank.

Then it was just a case of over planking the plywood at the bulwark.

And finally the bulwark planking is completed.

So now only the garboard plank to fit.

 

Sometimes I look to heavens for inspiration and occasionally I am rewarded. 

This is a new take on the workshop floor "black hole" problem. At some point an elastic band ripped this pin out of the building board and fired it into the ceiling. Fortunately the trajectory avoided important organs such as eyes. A timely warning me thinks!😬

A very brief update with little to show but a major milestone achieved.

 

Having completed the bulwark planking I moved back to the keel and attached the last few planks.

More potential notice board pin missiles, nervously in use.

And then thankfully that was that.

The next step is one of extensive sanding to get the hull smooth and sleek. I still have a lot of work to do on the hull but at least it feels like the worst is nearly over.

So onward and upward. Now if you thought planking was mind blowingly boring, just draw up your seats for sanding time!

 

Firstly though, the excitement of the week was breaking off the fragile keel end piece (red arrow). No it didn't break off neatly, the neatness comes from a bit of fettling. You can see the plank edges beginning to disappesr with the application of 80 grit aluminium oxide paper and a lot of elbow grease. I use a cork sanding block 2"x3"x"1" and one 8"x2"x3/4". No electric sanding aids for this old luddite. Note the copious amounts of dust collecting on the B&D Workmate.

To feel that I am making some progress I work my way around the hull progressively.

The planking job seems to be handling the reveal quite well for the moment. The "sanding through the planks tension" builds just like electric car range anxiety. I comfort myself by starting to draw pictures in the sanding dust.

To break the excitement I pick up the broom and do a bit of dust mountain creation on the workshop floor. it was about here that I wandered into the kitchen for a cup of tea only to be thrown out because I apparently looked like the dust monster.

At this point "thickness anxiety" overcame me and I switched to 120 grit.

In my backward construction world it now seemed about the right time to retrofit the rabbet line. The pointy but at the front was sanded flat revealing the bow frame.

 This was then overlayed by a longitudinal plank over the bow and along the keel. Held in place by PVA glue, elastic bands and the "Mother of All Board Pin" (MOABp) missiles. 

Then along the keel with more rabbet planks. The sanding stick isn't being glued on, it s just evening out the pressure on the plank being attached below.

A second rabbet plank was then attached over the first.

I then cut 1/10" strips of card and pasted these along the rabbet strips as a sanding guide. The keel has yet to be attached and this will be 1/10" wide and will fit on to the landing defined by the paper strips.

Then some more 120 grit sanding the fair in the rabbet strips and further smooth the hull. The planking is now of indeterminate thickness but holding up for the moment. No major planking gaffs discovered as yet.

Now the detached "keel end blunder" needs to be attended to. But that is a job for next time. The skeg block is finally starting the blend into the hull.
