Given how small they are relative to the hull and the probable cruising speed of the yacht, I imagine that they were probably not particularly successful in attenuating the roll.  However, knowing that they had been installed (expensively, no doubt), perhaps the owner(s) just "felt" better.

 Keith, add them to the hull and if you absolutely despise the look of them, build the stand in such a way that they are hidden.

Still like the idea of a white stripe on the hull where it meets the dark green color of the topsides with the mahogany below!

They definitely ruin the fantastic shape of that timeless hull. I would not install them.

Plus they will get broken in the process of building the superstructures and handling the hull.

Rick - that was always going to be the plan but as time goes by I am refining it. Indecision is the sincerest form of procrastination.

Yves, I feel compelled to resit my desire to exclude them. I am hoping that finishing them in mahogany to match the lower hull will cause them to fade into the background. 🤞

Hi Keith, OK, I'll be the "stick in the mud" .  To me, while I agree about the aesthetics of the issue (ruins/denigrates the lines of that beautiful hull), I tend to model my subjects true to the period/time I have selected for the model.  If you have selected 'as built' then leave them off, but if you have selected a more current time, and they were fitted at that time, then I would include them.  In the end though, the decision is yours, and you have to live with it.

 

Enjoying your build, which is coming along as nicely, if not better than you previous high quality builds.

For me, it's a decision point. If you intend to build she as current state, include the stabilisers and build the bridge with modern navigation instrumentation (i mean radar screens etc.) as shown on the pictures. If you'd like to omit the stabilisers, i think you should build the bridge as an older look too. Plus, in this case you have to omit the WD40-Duct tape combo from the machinery shop.

Poetic licence my friend, yes they are on her in the period you are modelling but they weren't original. Only you and a handful of us will know.

I can see why they were added though, she would have been a bit roly poly I imagine.

Yes Steve - her bottom isn't very flat and I guess this would have had a negative impact on righting moment.

If it were I, I would leave the stabilizers off the boat.

The gracefulness of the hull is just too sweet to have something hanging off it.

A little more progress.

 

At the front of the stabilisers are a couple of metal fillets - presumably to deflect debris from the gap between the stabiliser and the hull. I'm not sure why the holes in the stabilisers are for and I have omitted them in error. I'll need to go back and insert these.

I cut the fillets from brass and included a web for mounting.

Cutting the slot in the hull was another stressful operation - I marked the slot position with card.

Before cutting the slot with an x-acto keyhole saw.

I took my time to avoid damaging the hull varnish.

The stabilisers and fillets were then Temporarily installed to test the fit.

Then it was on to preparing for the paint job. Starting with the waterline stripe. I was having difficulty getting the waterline to sit at the correct height at bow and stern using the laser level. After some head scratching I realised that the bench wasn't perfectly horizontal. This of course wouldn't have been a problem if I had been marking the waterline with the traditional scribing block and pencil method. To sort the problem out I had to shim the base board at the bow. I also had to place a spirit level on the bench (as a track for the laser level), also shimmed to be horizontal. (See arrows).

Having sorted the levelling problem I went on to mark the waterline by laying the masking tape directly to the laser line.

After changing the height of laser I went on to  mask the upper edge of the waterline. 

Of course I then had to turn the hull round and re-level before taping the other side.

I didn't get any further with masking because I got the call for dinner. One must never delay when called by "she who must be obeyed" or the dinner will be in the dog.

Just a guess about the holes in the stabilizers, but I would bet they are "lifting holes." On both my cruiser and minesweeper models the blueprints showed holes near the top corners of the rudders. These were where shackles or eye bolts could be installed so cables could be attached for lifting the rudders when they were being removed from the hull.

 

I also had the leveling problem when I was using the laser to draw the waterline marks on my MSI hull. Things just didn't line up correctly. It took me a while to realize that the bench top was slightly off level!

Phil - I was guessing that was what they were for but good to get an educated confirmation. I now feel in good company with my levelling mistake.

John - Me neither for much of my life. I do however remember borrowing a Sinclair Scientific calculator for my finals in 1975 - a mere 50 years ago.😬😬. I also remember our first family B&W TV in 1958 - 67 years ago. I also remember being inspired to start my boat modelling career when I watched Noah working on his Arc.
