William L. Crothers

I am very sorry to report that Bill Crothers passed away on Friday, May 1.  He was in his 103rd year.  Bill’s research and writings on American clippers and packets, in particular his intensive exploration of the structures of these ships, place him at the forefront of contributors to our knowledge of these subjects.  I am personally indebted to him, for without his work there would be no framed Young America model, nor perhaps more excellent examples to follow.  It was my special privilege to have briefly known Bill and to have his valuable comments on my work.  I will always value the interest he showed in the model, no less than the writings that made it possible.

That was a fitting tribute to a great guy Ed. We all live on through the stories that are told of us, and that was a good one!

Great tribute Ed.  I too have been moved by Mr. Crothers writings and collections of clipper ship data. His collective research is in my view, priceless.

And you have translated his work into a living representation.  No better tribute.

Hi All,

I don't recall the origins or original use of this phase, but in model ship building as well as other fields of endeavor, "We stand on the shoulders of giants". It is easy to sometimes forget what we owe to the likes of Mr. Crothers and Mr. Chapelle.

P.s. Ditto on Rob's comments on your build, your writings, and contribution. J.

Sorry to hear of Crothers' passing... I am contemplating/planning an eventual scratch build of the clipper "Red Jacket" (inspired by your Young America build Ed) and to such end have acquired his plans ("Sea Gull" branded plans from Taubman) along with his book "The American-Built Clipper Ship". The plans are excellent (for my needs) and I am about halfway through his book (a surprisingly enjoyable read). Together they will allow me to build a more than "reasonable facsimile" of the ship after launch.

Good luck with your Red Jacket project.  Bill's plans, I have three, are excellent.

Sorry there have been no YA updates recently - too busy getting the book out.

I like the method of filling the space between the bulkheads. It gives you a very strong "framework".

As always, I appreciate all of the comments so many have made on the Young America project.  I am sorry that it has been well over a month since the last progress report.  The model work has been on hold for a few reasons - work on the book manuscript, a two week vacation from which we just returned, and the need to do research and drawings for the next phases of the build - fitting out the main deck, masting and rigging.  I do not expect that there will be much progress on the model until later in the summer.

However, during that period I will be posting progress on the 1:96 POB version of the model that has been constructed for demonstration purposes - to support the POB modeling processes that are also described in the book.  Some may find this model and its contrasts with the 1:72 framed model interesting.  I will start a separate build log for this.  Since that model has progressed to the point shown  in one of the above posts, the build log will be somewhat retrospective, but I will continue it as far as I decide to take that model.  My intent with the smaller, simpler model has always been to take it to a point where remaining work on both versions can proceed from the same process descriptions.  That has been done and the final chapters in Volume I of the book apply to both versions.  However, I am considering continuing the POB build to a more finished state.

Again, thanks to everyone for the continued support and comments.

Thanks for the update Ed........Great job! I've spend ample hours myself in historical study for my current builds and at a stop point as well.

Again, thanks for this fine log.

Hi Ed,

It sure is looking terrific!

I'm finally almost done with Lightning's ratlines. Over 1000 clove hitches, I'll never forget that knot if I live 500 years!

Them I'm ready to start installing the yards. It will be quite a moment to finally open my drawer full of yards and start in on them. I'll be posting my progress pics soon. I'll be showing the tools I've found the most used. Not many at all.

Once again, your model is wonderful.

Hi Bruce,

Sometimes its best not to count things.  I look forward to your pics.

Thanks for your comments - looking forward to resuming work on the framed model.  Trying to get the POB version caught up.

The Book is out!

I hope I may be permitted some euphoria over the publication of Modeling the Extreme Clipper Young America, Volume I.  It took a lot of effort by Sea Watch Books and me to get this to market this year.  There were times early in the year when the amount of modeling and writing required to meet this deadline seemed insurmountable.  All the generous and supportive responses to the two build logs on this site helped us keep our nose to the grindstone.

The picture below of the book and its supplementary material hardly does justice to Derek Gardeners beautiful rendering of Young America on the Irish Sea on a winter’s morning as she approaches Liverpool – but it does serve as proof that the book is in print.  I have examined every inch of this first copy and am delighted with the result.  We hope you will be as well.

As I did with the Naiad books, I will start a topic in the book review section for comments, questions, addenda, and what I hope will be very few corrections. In the meantime, this posting on each of the two build logs will at least serve notice that the book is out.

Thanks again for all your support.

I'm very happy for you, Ed.  I don't know whether to wait until Mystic so I can get an autographed copy, or to order it now to satisfy my need for instant gratification.
