Good point, Wayne.  That should take at least 256 blocks, 512 eyebolts and a boatload of rope coils (not counting the breech lines).  Good fun :D  :D

Sjors,

Looking good there.  :)   When ports and cannons start to drive you nuts, remind yourself that it's only 64 guns and not a 74-gun ship or a 100 gun ship.  ;)

Thank you all again  :D  :D

@ Wayne,

The carriages are done, only painting and then I have to drill a few 100 holes for the eyebolts.....

I'm happy that I have a power tool for that !

One at the time and someday there all done......

@

Augie,

Wait and see  :D  :D

@ Piet,

No worries.

We are friends so I'm not harming you !

@ Popeye,

Cotton balls are for the Le Mirage !

Now I have real ones !!!!!!!

@ Mark,

I keep that in mind.....

Not 74 or 100 but only 64 ..... ^_^

Hello Sjors,

I take a lot of pleasure following your interesting and well documented log.

What is your experience using the Caldercraft template?

I was very disappointed using it. And, I decided to redraw all the gunports using the device for drawing the water lines and of course a calliper square.

It took me a lot of time but I am happy with the result.  I think that the problems is due to the fact that the paper template cannot follow properly the curvature of the hull.

Your Aggie will be great!

Pierre

Hi Pierre,

Thanks !

I'm also a bit disappointed about the template.

When I take the pictures for Jason I found out that for some reason the template moved......

The gun ports that I cut out where to low I thought.......

So I take a cannon and there is nothing wrong with it.

Strange !

You have to measure ten times before you can drill.

So, we are keeping going on.

It's just playing with the wood !

I would think that that would be the trick, but I could see this being a slow process!  I'm guessing the template is OK to find the horizontal position, but can only really be used to approximate the vertical position, the interior deck height must be measured to get that right.  It also seems that that would be important to get the wale alignment correct, so getting the interior deck in correctly seems critical to later stages.  I'm impressed and a little daunted if I follow in your footsteps! :D

Cheers,

Jason

Thanks Patrick  :D  :D

I need the template but also my own measurements.

As we are saying in the house.....komt goed  :D  :D  :D  :D ( free translation ....everything will find his place )

No comment on that Grant !   :D  :D  :D  :D  :D

And I have to believe you Sam ???????

@ Jason,

When I see this I understand what you are meaning.

It is a slow process but ok, it has to be done.

I take my time with it.

And because it is wood, you can change things when it is wrong.

Just what i was saying to Patrick.....komt goed !!!!!

I have cut out four gun ports and place cannons in it.

Just to see how it looks !

Beware.....every thing needs his paint and the framing for the gun ports has also to be done.

But first I want to cut out all the gun ports.

That takes a while....

  • 2 weeks later...

On the starboard side the gun ports are cut out and placed the sills and painted them.

Now I can go to the port side.......

The same process is going on then.

After that I can start the stern and quarter gallery's and second planking....

The weather is great so I can sit outside and do the drilling ......
