Did you think I was going to take a break after finishing my Bf 109 last night? Ha! That is where you'd be wrong! Of course, you are also wrong if you thought I might be going back to work on Phoenix. The reason I'm not is because I only have a month before I'm taking a long-ish Christmas break, during which there will be no modeling. 😒 So I've decided to tackle a small project that I think I may be able to finish within four weeks.

That project is the Norwegian excursion steamer DS Børøysund, currently home-ported in Oslo. She began life in 1908 as the Odin. She went through a number of owners over the years, all of whom it seems didn't care for whatever the ship's previous name was, so they changed it. She became the Børøysund after being acquired by the Norwegian Veteran Ships Club in 1968.  Børøysund is 33.1 m long with a beam of 5.5 m. Her triple expansion steam powerplant can whisk 100 passengers along at a breathtaking 9 knots. At 1/250 scale, the model consists of only two pages of parts and when completed will be a shade over five inches in length. I also have the laser-cut detail set.

Look for first cuts soon!

And here is the completed internal framing. For anyone unfamiliar with the process, the hull base plate is temporarily glued to a piece of glass to keep the hull flat during construction -- just a small spot of glue at the bow and stern. This is typical "egg crate" construction, but this newer design has two additional longitudinal frames (older kits typically only have the center-line frame), which should greatly aid in construction. To provide additional strength, I soaked all of the frames in thin CA -- before adding them to the base plate, obviously, otherwise the hull and glass plate would be mated for eternity.

Work on these small models progresses pretty quickly. Next we have the hull plating. I'm not completely satisfied with my work on this part, but as you'll see shortly there's a way to deal with this -- kind of.

P.S. While I was trying to get the port-side plating on, the model popped off its glass plate, which actually made the job easier, thankfully.

Next we start attaching the laser-cut railings. These add a substantial amount of 'wow' factor to the model and help draw attention away from less expertly done parts of the model.

Moving forward, we install the inner bulwarks, stanchions, foredeck railings, and caprails.

That's all for now!

The bridge has been added. The kit includes optional parts for the bridge interior. I decided not to add these, because that would require cutting out the many printed bridge windows and then glazing them. It's a difficult task to do neatly, nearly impossible actually, and the finished interior would be difficult to see -- just not worth the extra effort IMO.

Finally got around to rigging the aft mast. Boy, was that an aggravating task!! Part of the reason for that is that the diagrams are fairly vague about where the various stays attach, and there are no insertion marks on the parts. I needed to consult some photos online. The other aggravation factor was simply the pain of having to work with very short pieces of EZ-Line in very tight spaces -- not very relaxing. BTW, I'm not doing all of the rigging. The rigging for the davits, for example, would be IMHO far too tedious and annoying than the results would be worth, and besides there is a lot of missing davit hardware, e.g., blocks, cleats. Also besides, I showed my wife the finished rigging, and her reaction was, "What rigging?", which solidifies the decision in my view.

It's looking really nice.

I'm looking for a scratch built project.   At 1:48 it would be a nice size for me. Do you think if I bought the plans I could enlarge them to 1:48 and use them for a build?

I've thought about doing this on some card models but don't really know how how feasible it is.  It would open up a lot of choices in ships.

I've done 3 or 4 scratch built models from museum plans and have wondered how feasible it would be from card model sheets.

It's not unheard of for modelers to do just that, but I don't know where the upper limit is on how much a kit can be enlarged and retain its sharp lines. Going from 1/250 to 1/48 would be quite a leap.

The foremast is now complete. What a chore! I dropped one of the tiny deck lamps during construction, and of course it disappeared into the jaws of the Carpet Monster, never to be seen again, so I had to scratch-build a replacement. Then I noticed that I had glued the lamps to the wrong part of the mast, requiring some delicate surgery to remove them and re-glue them in the right place. But that part is done now -- whew!! All that is left is three navigation lights and the flags.

All done! One month from start to finish. Any faults in the finished product are entirely my own doing. The kit itself is a gem. I still need to work on my egg-crate hull skills -- once the hull popped off its glass plate, I tended to hold it in the same places, resulting in a little of the 'starving cow' look, but not too bad. Here's the final pics:

I'm 95% certain that my next project is included in a package that's currently on its way here from Poland. Look for that one in the new year.

Cheers!

Congratulations Chris, another fine card build. :champagne-2:
You have inspired me,I might have to get a card model out of my stash next time I hit a hard bit on my current project.
