Slade's design draught of the 'Victory' from 1765 is in the NMM collection,  but it is very badly damaged and difficult to make out the details in the online image.  However,  there is an image of it in a recent book on Nelson's Victory by Brian Lavery which I have,  and here it can be made out that this deck at the same level as the upper deck.

There exist a second contemporary drawing of HMS Victory in the Danish Orlogbasen. Click on B18

Further to the raised beakhead platform issue:

The original beakhead was part of the upper deck. It aligned with the lowest point of the main rail of the head in the ship as originally built. This headwork was rather old fashioned and deep. When the headwork was replaced with a higher 'modern' one, the main rail was also constructed at a higher level and the additional platform added to line things up again.

You can see this on the original draught and compare this to the ship as she now is.

I can't get over the scale of this project. How much does it weigh? Beautiful work, and excellent choice of woods.

E&T,

I didn't precisely weighted it but based on the effort I need to make each time I take it out from my basement for the twice a year exhibitions I participate I would estimate to be about 40kg or about 90pounds. A bit heavier each time.

Druxey,

This is the most pertinent explanation of the difference between draughts and existing ship. Thank you for clarifying this to us.

Wow!!!

I had not really looked at the scratch-built logs much, but after seeing this one, I will be looking much more.  I cannot believe the detail.  It almost looks like a regular full-sized shipyard in action.  I too wonder what this thing will weigh when done.

Also, do you have any sketches or plans that I could plagiarize. :)  Just kidding, I would love to build this someday.

G'day Alexandru

Your workmanship is outstanding. Can I ask you a silly question? What is the string for, I know it's to line up something, but what is being lined up?

Well anyway mate, I will be looking forward to see your new log entry.

Have a good day.

Greg

Hello all,

Quarter deck almost complete - missing last two beams - somehow I counted them wrong. I still have to add several hanging knee and lodging knees too.

Before someone asks, in the before last picture the space for the companionway between the first (lower) two beams is shifted toward left as in the plans.

The upper deck below was oiled as there will be nothing else that needs to be glued to it.

Regards,

Alexandru

G'day

I love your details and beautiful stanchions. Do you have a master copy to do the lathe work or are they each crafted to be the same?

Hi Greg,

There is no master template and copy. I do them one by one using the first one as model on which I take the measurements and try to match the subsequent as much as possible. They are similar enough but not identical.
