66ft Motor cruiser "Mystic" by Omega1234 - 1928. 1:278 scale - Finished

Recommended Posts

Hi Piet.  Mmmm, trust me.  I had actually thought of a POF build for the dinghy.  But, at 2cms long, I don't even know if that's possible.  May be worth a try, though....you never know.

Go for it.  We'll all sit here with our mouths open if you do.

Bob

Hi Dave and Bob, and all others for hitting the Like button.

David-Yep. I plan on painting the port side of her hull white, while leaving the starboard side with cutout varnished.

Bob - thanks for the encouragement. A 2cm POF dinghy hull....madness, madness I say!!! Ok. I'll give it a go.

All the best!

Hi everyone. Thanks for all your Likes and feedback.

David (dgbot) - Mystic's hull is now sporting its first lick of white paint. More coats with sanding in between are required to get the hull nice and smooth, though. Hope you like it so far. You're definitely right, though, David. The painting of the hull has certainly improved Mystic's overall appearance.

Bob and Piet. Although I don't have photos yet, you may be interested to know that I've been planning how to build a 2cm long POF dinghy. It's possible, but I may have to make some compromises along the way. I'll post photos once I get started.

All the best, everyone!

I did it! I did it! Well, I sorta did it. The compromise was that I couldn't do the hull as a clinker hull, due to its tiny size, difficulty in making the planks thin enough and carving a rabbett line. There are certain realities in size that just can't be overlooked, afterall.

Anyhow, the hull has five frames, including the transom. It's planked with wood, although the frames and keel are made out of card.

There's still much finishing off, including the deck boards, painting, oars, etc that need to be fitted. Nonetheless, I hope you enjoy the photos!!!

I'm a happy man!

Classic motor yachts and cruisers are very classy vessels.  There should be more models of them!

They are indeed very elegant aren't they.

I built a very large model (5 feet long) for the owner of a classic motor cruiser the 'Lulubelle' a couple of years ago.

The original was built by Consolidated shipyards in New York in the late 20's.

Here are a few photos. And for those who want to see a slide show of the whole construction process. Here's a link.

Congratulations to Omega on your really excellent model. I could never hope to work at such a small scale. "God bless your eyes" as my dear old grandad used to say..!

Seeing that dingy and fully framed... I'm almost ready to give up building and take up dog walking.

Magic, pure magic!  That's really some unreal modeling Omega, well done.  That'll make my 7 cm dinghy a giant!  Oh, I had visions of mono filament for the frames and paper for the planking but your idea works great. Congrats.

I'm just thinking here, where does it stop in making tiny POF boats or ships even smaller - - - - - -

Hi Vivian, Bob, Overdale, Michael, Mark, Piet and everyone else for their likes and comments. Greatly appreciated!

Mark - forget dog walking! It's in the public's best interest that that you stay with the hobby. You don't want to be picking up dog crap all day!

Vivian . Many thanks and all the best.

Bob - greatly appreciated!

Michael - I have to say that your tiny cutter was part inspiration for doing small things!

Piet - monofilaments and paper. Why didn't I think of that! Mine's far from perfect, but at least I've proved to myself that I can do it. Now, I just need to fix up all the errors. Can't wait to see yours when it's done!

Overdale. What can I say. You have amazed me with your beautiful model. Your workmanship is second to none; not to mention the quality of your wood panelling skills. She's a beauty! I think you need to do a build-log for her, so that other members can enjoy it. Well done!

All the best everyone and thanks!

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi everyone! I've been pretty crook the past few weeks, so, I haven't done much on Mystic. However, last night I was able to add some detail to the dinghy, thereby making it look more like a dinghy than it did before. I've also added the chocks to sit the dinghy on. I've started to sand the hull with wet and dry sandpaper, hence the patchy appearance of Mystic's hull.

Next, I'll need to finish the mast and davit, anchor, windlass, painting, etc, etc. The dinghy will also be painted, as well.

Hope you enjoy the photos!

Hi all. Just did a little bit more work on Mystic. This included adding another coat of thin paint to the dinghy's hull as well as Mystic's, doing some more work on the mast and boom and adding eyelets and blocks where appropriate. I've also added the windlass and located it on the foredeck.

Hope you enjoy the photos!

Cheers

Hi Popeye, Michael, Mick, Nils, Piet and all those who hit the Like button. Greatly appreciated.

Popeye. I must admit to liking Matchbox toys when I was a kid, so, that's a great compliment. Thanks!

Piet and Mick...oars??? Don't give me any more ideas, please!

Michael....yes, it's tiny, but to be honest, I think a bigger (yet still miniature) hull would have allowed more detail to be added. At least, I've proven to myself that I can build such a small model, whilst still making it look reasonably presentable.

Nils - I'll still need to build a display stand for my model of Ingomar...however once that's done and Mystic is finished, I'll then be able to commence on my Symphony model (pls see the link in my signature block). That should be lots of fun.

All the best everyone!

Hi all

Mystic now has a bit more detail added. These include the props and rudders (which still require final shaping, sanding and painting). A spotlight on the wheelhouse roof adjacent to the radar mast has been added. On the fore of the superstructure, two Dorade air vents have been added; whilst the finishing of the mast, davit and rigging are progressing well.

Mystic's hull has also been painted, as has the dinghy's hull. The dinghy still requires finessing and finishing off, eg fixing up the seat boards and sanding/painting of the hull.

Hope you enjoy the photos!

Merry Xmas and all the best for 2015!
