Very nice work Tom. The extensions for your bulwarks look to be right on target. Do you plan on planking the hull as your next step?

Hank, how are you not going cross-eyed looking at these tiny parts??? That is excellent work! I'll have to second Mark's comments about not seeing anything different between the two.

Al, I appreciate the links and further information regarding the gun port lids. I am definitely planning on no gun port lids at this point. I would like to make a battle station mock-up to go along with my Connie so a lot of my questions in this area are about securing the little details. John, thanks for looking in on me. I am actually working on Connie (and some progress is being made), it's just slow going with so many other things tugging me in every direction. I'm almost finished with the bulkheads.

Nice work Augie! I'm glad to see you back at it. I also am divided between the shipyard and the great outdoors when warmer weather comes around.

Sweet framing Michael! I can't wait to see the framing when the fairing is done.

My comment prior to this editing was ignorant of what you're seeing. Have you thought about drawing a straight line on the underside of the false deck to make sure it matches up with the false keel?

Michael, that's a great story!!! I have an eight year old daughter too and I can actually picture her doing exactly the same thing!

The gallery windows look nice and the entry ways look great too. From the tone of some comments on your log, I get the feeling that Constructo has run a little short of your expectations? You've managed to do well on this kit despite that.

Tim, that's an awesome suggestion. If I can't find what I'm looking for online then I will be sure to contact some folks in Baltimore. I was thinking about how the first crew would have secured the port lids and wanted to play around with some ideas surrounding that question. I was thinking that possibly they could have put the port lids in place with some form of cloth in between them and the inner walls of the gun port and then secured with some sort of heavy slide latch. They would almost to have handles then so the crew could pull them out of place once they needed to run out the guns. I've also heard mention that the port lids may have been nailed in place, but I would think this wouldn't be an ideal solution as eventually the wood would deteriorate to the point that the lids wouldn't be tightly fastened. Another question on this would be if they were inserted from the inside or the outside. They would certainly lend more strength being put in place from the outside but how would they go about doing it? Were the port lids the same thickness as the bulwarks. That would also make them fairly heavy and unwieldy. A thinner port lid might not seal up properly though. And lastly, where would they have been stowed so as not to create a tripping hazard in the heat of battle? Maybe I need to find something better to think about in my spare time...

Tim, I printed these off a regular printer after doing a search on google. I have the images stored on my desktop and would be more than happy to message you with them as attachments. Rich, thanks a ton for the compliments. I've got the Constitution going now; slowly but surely.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
