Really, really great looking work! I, too, am looking forward to the overall shot! (Thanks Mark - now I'll have that theme running through my head for the rest of the day....I'm humming it now )

Robbyn: Thanks! Not sure I have the patience to wait for the second planking wood to arrive! Augie: Thanks! I hardly think your beautiful Syren planking looks like an orange crate! She looks wonderful! Mark: Thanks! Hopefully the walnut will turn out well too. Adrieke: Thanks! I hope I don't have dents all over before I get the second planking on! Texxn5: Thank-you as well!

Okay....beginners luck. I went digging until I found a couple of slide covers, scored them with an exacto knife (not much more than a scratch or they crack) then positioned one over the edge of a board with a crisp edge and quickly tapped it with the eraser end of a pencil! It worked! The first one cracked when I tried to score it too deeply. The second worked better when I made 3 passes with lighter pressure. Now I don't have any more to see if I can repeat the result or if it was truly luck.

Wow! When I check in, it's two sets of pictures! Shrouds and lanyards look great...and the jig works well.

Popeye and Augie: You're both exactly right - that is why I had already ordered walnut to cover and stiffen the hull. The plans call for balsa as the first planking, and I had some on hand....so.... I knew, before I started, that balsa is 'tricky' to work with, but it will keep the ship nice and light. I will have to use a little filler in a couple of spots where one of the bulkheads was a little short and caused a low spot. I thought I had everything faired well, but funny how the planking shows each little imperfection!

Okay....garden is in...back to the shipyard! Anja: We definitely will enjoy our garden now that it is planted. We managed to plant it in one day - potatoes (65 plants), squash (3 varieties), Swiss chard, beets, carrots, lettuce (3 varieties), tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, beans, peas, onions, radish, dill and sunflowers! Steve: I'm not quite finished the first planking, but it's getting close. I still need to sand and trim, but here's how she looks at the moment.....

Great to see more progress - the second planking looks wonderful! Will you use stain, or oil or something different?
-
Looks good. Seems about right- just under a minute per hitch. The trick is keeping the right tension as you progress upward, so everything stays straight.

The shrouds are looking great....the rigging really changes the look of a ship, for the better, I think. The long boat looks like a wonderful project, and I think once you start it, the call of the Syren will wane.....a little.

Sorry about your 'incident' and glad it wasn't too serious. I think we can all learn a lesson here.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
