  1. That's great.......coming over to the 'darkside'! I will bring my own chair in case you don't have enough!
  2. Really, really great looking work! I, too, am looking forward to the overall shot! (Thanks Mark - now I'll have that theme running through my head for the rest of the day....I'm humming it now )
  3. ronald305: Thanks! The plans were given to me, but I think I can find out where they were purchased.
  4. Robbyn: Thanks! Not sure I have the patience to wait for the second planking wood to arrive! Augie: Thanks! I hardly think your beautiful Syren planking looks like an orange crate! She looks wonderful! Mark: Thanks! Hopefully the walnut will turn out well too. Adrieke: Thanks! I hope I don't have dents all over before I get the second planking on! Texxn5: Thank-you as well!
  5. Okay....beginners luck. I went digging until I found a couple of slide covers, scored them with an exacto knife (not much more than a scratch or they crack) then positioned one over the edge of a board with a crisp edge and quickly tapped it with the eraser end of a pencil! It worked! The first one cracked when I tried to score it too deeply. The second worked better when I made 3 passes with lighter pressure. Now I don't have any more to see if I can repeat the result or if it was truly luck.
  6. Okay...now I'm convinced that you have to be doing some of this in your sleep! That's what I'd have to do in order to accomplish so much on so many ships...and...have them all look so good!!!
  7. She's really looking great...the finish line is definitely in sight! The coils turned out well.
  8. Wow! When I check in, it's two sets of pictures! Shrouds and lanyards look great...and the jig works well.
  9. Popeye and Augie: You're both exactly right - that is why I had already ordered walnut to cover and stiffen the hull. The plans call for balsa as the first planking, and I had some on hand....so.... I knew, before I started, that balsa is 'tricky' to work with, but it will keep the ship nice and light. I will have to use a little filler in a couple of spots where one of the bulkheads was a little short and caused a low spot. I thought I had everything faired well, but funny how the planking shows each little imperfection!
  10. Thank-you Popeye and Paul! The deceiving thing about photos is that it's hard to discern the variety of wood. Yes, it turned out really smooth, but it's balsa wood, which would be too delicate if left as the only planking - as you can already imagine, it doesn't take stain very well either.
  11. Sjors: Thank-you! :D Steve: Thank-you as well! I didn't feel the earthquake, but several friends and family did. I was working outside and I guess I was just too focused on my work! It was a fairly 'big one' for our locale.
  12. Thanks Augie and Grant. The next problem I face is patiently waiting for wood to arrive. I only need 4 strips of first planking and I've run out. My walnut, for the second planking, is on it's way as well.
  13. Okay....garden is in...back to the shipyard! Anja: We definitely will enjoy our garden now that it is planted. We managed to plant it in one day - potatoes (65 plants), squash (3 varieties), Swiss chard, beets, carrots, lettuce (3 varieties), tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, beans, peas, onions, radish, dill and sunflowers! Steve: I'm not quite finished the first planking, but it's getting close. I still need to sand and trim, but here's how she looks at the moment.....
  14. Great to see more progress - the second planking looks wonderful! Will you use stain, or oil or something different?
  15. Looks good. Seems about right- just under a minute per hitch. The trick is keeping the right tension as you progress upward, so everything stays straight.
  16. Anja: Thank-you! The first planking is almost finished, but I won't have a chance to work on it over the weekend. The garden will be planted tomorrow, and that's an all day, maybe two day job! Our garden is about 20 x 70 feet now...it used to be twice that size.
  17. The shrouds are looking great....the rigging really changes the look of a ship, for the better, I think. The long boat looks like a wonderful project, and I think once you start it, the call of the Syren will wane.....a little.
  18. Wow Popeye - I am amazed how many ships you take on at once, and all look great. This is, and will be, no exception. I guess I'll pull up a chair.
  19. Sorry about your 'incident' and glad it wasn't too serious. I think we can all learn a lesson here.
