AntonyUK replied to maltbyguy's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
Hi Andy. I gotta go with Clare's advice. Will only be noticeable when viewed fron the Bows or Stern of the ship. Did you have a build log ? Regards Antony. -

Hi Sean. Wow fast progress with this kit. "The first obvious challenge is that the length of the planking strips 2x2 for the first 6 rows and then 2x3 for the remainder are not long enough to run from bow to stern. So the first decision is where to join the strips........Mmmmmmm ..... pretty disappointing." Yes I think there should be some mention of this in the instructions.. Make the joints on a bulkhead near the end of the plank length then the next one at the other end of the boat on a bulkhead. If the boat is planked inside you can add extra timber on the side of the bulkhead where the join is. But your bulkheads look quite thick so you might not need to add the extra timber. And yes steaming the strips before fitting and leting then dry is the best method. I use elastic bands for holding the more difficult strips in place. Regards Antony.

Hi Sean. Fantastic work and I do like people that follow the instructions.. As you have done keeping the frames square is Very important and you will be rewarded with a model that looks right. Very nice work. Especially on the curving of the deck. Regards Antony.

Hi Sean. We have all been there.. It's caused by selecting all the photos and uploading them and not putting the one in the post. Which appears at the bottom of the post. Or u uploaded it twice. A very nice start.. Veneer is best glue applied then clamped flat between tow pieces of thick timber. Regards Antony.

Hi Sean. "The lower decks seem to be formed by gluing a wood veneer (with planking lines) onto a base board. The veneer is VERY thin at about 0.5mm. Mmmmmm a bit disappointing TBH. " Most Veneers are this thick and it's a standard thickness. "The main masts material is 4mm dowel and the foremast seems very lightweight at just under 3mm (2.93mm). Again a bit disappointing as the kit box photo and marketing photos indicate a more substantive material." It's a scale model and a mast that is oversize would ruin the whole model. "The sail material is very thin cotton (0.18mm) and this is accompanied by the rigging which is again a fairly lightweight thread. Not sure Ill use either TBH. " we all suffer with sail material being too thick and not looking right. If you purchase thicker material then compare the looks before committing it to the model. Will follow along with this build.. Regards Antony.

Hi. I have built the cross section of the victory. http://forum.model-space.co.uk/default.aspx?g=topics&f=93 The link to there forum on the cross section build is above. This kit is unique to model space. Very nice instruction in the book that comes with the parts. The wood is not so good and they use a lot of very hard bamboo. I replaced this timber. The plywood cutting was Exelent and the best I have seen to date. I have also built the Amarti victory cross section ( Very poor quality ) Not a patch on part works . And I have another compleat set of books and parts for the victory cross section in the loft ready to build. Ex EBay and a quater of the price. Regards Antony.

Hi Bob. I know the feeling about replacing components that come with kits. With the cost of the kit you would think the contents would be up to Chucks (Syren model ship company) quality level. Some kit manufactures really do put some rubbish in the kits. Still following this Exelent build. Should be starting mine next week all being well. Regards Antony.

Hi Daniel. Ouch that kinda hurt. Takes a lot of courage to do what you have just done... But you have a high standard it's the only way of correcting the model to how you want it. Were did you get the "original drawings made on behalf the Admiralty 1787 soon after the purchase of the Bethia" ?? Regards Antony.

Hi UdoK. Nice to see you back on the build. As always a Exelent build. Regards Antony.

Compound Cut
AntonyUK replied to Burroak's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
Hi Greg. I tend to start at the Stem when I am planking. There is sometimes a rebate in the stem to allow the planks to fit. If not I would add one. I shape the plank first with all the tappers and featherings done then I offer the plank to the stem and draw the line to match the angle of the stem. I then use a razor saw to trim to rough size. Then adjust the angle to match the rebate with sandpaper or sharp knife. Regards Antony. -
Hi Wim. Nice job on the sails. There are so many pictures out there on the net of the Turtle ship.. But none of the ships are the same.. Makes me wonder if any of then are they have any idea on what the turtle ship acutely looked like and just drawn it to notes that have been found. But I must say the young modeler kit seames to be as near it can be to scale and realistic in its size and build styles. Looking forward to getting my kit.. I've had the DVD of the " Roaring Currents" for christmas. Watched it twice now... Not much on the Turtle ship But a very good film portraying Korean history and Korean cultural history. Regards Antony.
