A very small drop of water will help the glue flow without significantly changing it's properties. Experiment a little and you will see what I mean. More diluted forms (eg 50/50 glue/water) is useful when working with rigging components, stiffening lines etc.

As Brian says, thinning with some water will help with spreading it. I generally put a small amount of PVA into an old egg cup and then add any water I need to thin it to the right consistency for the job at hand. I use a toothpick for applying small amounts, and a paint brush for larger areas. Just be sure to wash the paint brush before the glue dries in it.

It's also the order in which they go over the masthead Sjors, with the forward ones being the lowest (having gone on first). We'd probably let you get away with it, but I'm sure Mobbsie will invite himself over and rip them off if you don't do it right!

Nothing quite like a batch of fresh timber from Hobbymill. Makes me start drooling just looking at the pics! Happy dance indeed!

Lovely work with the crows feet Mobbsie. I feel somewhat responsible for your "side project" but not the slightest bit guilty! Hope you have fun with the new toys and don't forget to post pics when they arrive.

Tippecanoe make a kit for a T-37 that looks nice and might fit what you're looking for. There have been a couple of build logs here on MSW - one by Floyd Kershner as I recall. Here is a link to the Tippecanoe website: http://www.modelsailboat.com/t37sail.html

Looking at the last two lines of your last post Sjors, if that is true and you are still on MSW, then one of you has a problem!

Thank you all for the kind comments and words of encouragement, and also to all those who "liked".. I'm really looking forward to finishing off the last parts of the rigging and doing the final additions.
-
Thank you Patrick. Ah yes, the 10" bandsaw. Handy thing for a picnic, as the saying goes. Mainly thinking of future projects for that one.....
-
I'm afraid not Lawrence. The Admiral only gets involved with funding approval for "essential" equipment. She won't get her hands dirty in the shipyard - too much bad language coming from there for her taste!

Well, I managed to finish off the Mizzen yards as planned today. I've attached a few pics to give the overall impression, but I'm afraid the photographer is not very good! I tried placing a large cutting mat as the background so that the lighter running rigging could be seen instead of disappearing into the white wall behind. Here they are anyway; Okay, next up Driver Boom and Gaff. That may have to wait a little while as we're off to Sydney again next weekend ...... although I've been promised another visit to Carbatec where I've got my eye on a 10" bandsaw..........
-
Thanks Slog. Keeping track of the rigging is actually easier than you might think. The hard part is getting your head around what line is what in the plans, and being able to cross-reference against Longridge. But probably the hardest part of all is belaying the lines to tiny pins and shroud cleats. My wife's vocabulary has increased considerably of late - and not for the better!

I've been out of the shipyard for a couple of weeks as we've been back and forth to Sydney quite a bit for family matters. On the plus side, on our last trip up there, I was allowed to visit my favourite toy store - Carbatec, and was also allowed to purchase some dust collection equipment. (I figured that as I now owned a serious assortment of dust-making machinery, it was time to do something serious about dust collection). In return for my wife's indulgence of my hobby, I took her across the road for a romantic dinner for two at IKEA. (Mind you, there's method in her madness. I think that visit to IKEA is about to cost some serious $$$). We gave ourselves the weekend off this weekend, so I was at last able to get back to the shipyard. After fixing a couple of errors I just noticed from my last efforts on the rigging, I did manage to finish the Main yards to the same state as the Fore yards (minus errors). Tomorrow should see me achieve the same on the Mizzen yards, and then it's on to the Driver Boom and Gaff. After that, Sheets, Tacks and Braces, and Bowlines, and I'm just about there. Oh - there is still the small matter of another boat or few..... Pics tomorrow.

Okay Sjors. So I came running over here from your Aggy log, thinking I'd be late for the party, and what do I find? No update, that's what. Sheesh! Or should that be pfffffffff!

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
