  1. Hi Patrick, Chuck's cannon's are superb. I had a discussion with him some time back, and he was considering making some carronades also, but he probably hasn't had much time to do so as he is quite busy. He did have a drawing of them though, so maybe by the time you get around to needing them he might have made them. Here is when a small lathe comes in handy.
  2. The details once again are unreal. It will be interesting to see how this progresses as you move upwards.
  3. Looks very good my friend. You should have a lot of fun with this. Nice photos, thanks.
  4. Hey Patrick, good to see you getting started. I'll pull up to the table with the Admiralty and the rest of the gang, for popcorn and beer. Yes Piet I brought you a Leffe. Great start with the log and congrats again on the Niagra. Funny, on my travels east last year, my first ship to see was the Niagra, then on to New England to see the Constitution and Henry, then down to Mystic to see the Morgan. I have the finished Revell Conny, and working on the Morgan, and The Niagra is the next build when finished with the Morgan. Good luck with the Conny and looking forward to following along. You'll get to break in that scroll saw pretty quick, might even wear it out before you finish....lol.
  5. Really nice Patrick, job well done. Save me a seat for the Conny. That will be a challenge for sure. Thanks for all you put into your log as I will be using it for reference once I begin building her.
  6. Sjors, my friend, you're workshop could be an advertisement for Proxxon.....they are well represented here...nice work and good to see the shipyard look worked in. I'll be doing the same soon...
  7. Ah, back in the shipyard.....can't keep an ole' salt down....much less a Dutchman....Fantastic metal work as usual my friend. Speaking of hinges what are you going to do about the hatches for the mines??? Maybe someting else to do???? Oh, that's right you were thinking about limiting the outside details if I recall. Oh well just disregard that, and please don't think of it as a challenge or anything...I wouldn't do that to ya. One mine would probably be sufficient also..Proost my friend, another Leffe Blond goes down without a fight...
  8. Sounds great Mike, glad I could help a little. The model with the sails is of the Morgan, it is completely finished on the starboard side, and cut away on the port side, allowing the observer to see inside the hull and deck structures, it is an interesting approach also. Good luck with the decisions on finish and colors, they can be tricky...
  9. Oops, sorry forgot to comment on the yellow ochre color. When choosing how to do mine, I decided I wanted to duplicate the ship as near to real as possible, which involved paint. I wasn't sure of my skills enough to try natural or stained wood. I love stained wood, but I also like painted surfaces, which saved on wood costs and errors were easily concealed with the paint. One exception I wish I had made was on the deck. The color I used was a combination MinWax stain/satin finish acrylic varnish. It turned out a little darker than I expected or wanted. I should have tried the weathered or bleached teak finish so common on military decks of the 20th century, which is a grayish finish. The real deck of the Morgan is Oak left to weather. I do like the natural white effect that boxwood seems to finish off to. It again is a matter of choice and only you can make that decision as to how you want it to look. If you choose to go natural, I would vote against using the wood that comes in the kit....my basswood was not that satisfactory and quite irregular in both width and color as well as overall unsatisfactory, but I lived with it and covered it up with paint. The yellow ochre MS paint is an exact match for the real Morgan finish.
  10. That's an interesting concept as to colors and sails or a diorama. I have photos of a really great large scale diorama at the Mystic Research Center lobby. It is the sister ship to the Morgan, The Two Brothers and it is very similar in construction. It is in the water with a whale tied up along side, whaleboats in the davits. That would be a very ambitious project but really cool looking. I also have photos of another whaler model with a crew.
  11. Hi Mike, great finish...now for the encore! Glad to hear you will be joining the Morgan club, yes no cannons, but lots of deck details that are quite fun to build. The seven boats is going to be a challenge. Two of them mount upside down on deck structures, so other than shaping and few small details, they won't be too bad. I hope to do them gradually inbetween other rigging to break up the monotany. I do plan to detail them quite like Salty Sea Dog dig his larger scale ones. They are like a build in their own. When do you plan to start? It will be nice to have someone to go through the misery..I mean fun with and bounce ideas off of...Job well done on the Badger...you're more than ready to tackle the Morgan
  12. Well, Well, it appears you remember how to plank...and we actually got pictures. I'm impressed, way to go Sjors...very nice
  13. thanks Pat, but it's gonna be a while before I can start. The Morgan has a long way to go yet, and I'm getting the itch to get started on my annual RV trip out west as soon as the weather allows. I like your flags, and it seems like Dennis has some good ideas for them also....
  14. really looks great Michael, I understand there is nothing like Chuck's ropes....probably make things easier for you.
