NEW MEMBER and new to model ship building
Dave_E replied to Peter6172's topic in New member Introductions
Hi Peter. This is the place where learning happens. 👍😀 -
Wow, moving along! After seeing your carving… I have a new respect for solid hull models. I’ve pulled up my follow chair. Also watching your rigging work prior to stepping the mast.

Excellent idea, thank you, Yes, I'm going to paint below the waterline... I'll use the dark purple ones down there and mix up the rest.

Hi All, Another newb question. Got out the walnut planking that came in the Amati kit. As you can see, 3 noticeable shades of color. On the first build... random picks for the next piece?

Thanks Lyle, I’ll take you up on that. As I look at others work, the authenticity is one of the things that grabs me. I salvaged the 1st planking… (I think) think I’ll go for it. Would one of the plank cutter tools be in order? Best place to read up on plank splice patterns?

2nd Planking question (I'm asking simply because I don't know). I think all would concur that a first time builder's project is going to have it's share of boo-boos etc.. However while I've been building, I am reviewing others builds and noticing things that pertain to authenticity. Decking and planking come to mind first. As we all could guess, a 100' ship was not made with 100' planks and decking. These double planked models can get away with the first planking being all one piece planks. Authenticity can then be done on the second planking, no? My question to you is should I attempt the authentic planking on this my first build, or stick with the kit "one piece" planks? Your recommendations that is.

I see many builders who’s planks are in sections. I would assume they are to scale length that a ship of this size would use? Did the kit come this way or did you cut the long planks down that were supplied? Other than authenticity sis there a reason to plank like this, easier or harder? Just doing some learning here. 😊

Spent a couple days doing the cannons, more on these in my "1:64 Cannon Detail" post over in furnishings. Now I guess it's back to construction and planking. 😄

1:64 cannon detail
Dave_E replied to Dave_E's topic in Discussion for a Ship's Deck Furniture, Guns, boats and other Fittings
How Do Everyone, I think with the help of our friend Henrythestaffy in Australia, we have cannage. 😁 He supplied these beautifull 3D works of art for me. I thought I'd leave well enough alone and not go dabbling any further with this first build on the cannons. The painting under a magnifyer was a new experience, wasn' too bad actually. Of course later on comes the rigging. I will probably keep it basic. Thanks for all the help here.
