  1. This was my first wood model and also used Hopeful's as inspiration. She makes a beautiful little model and gets alot of complements! Keep it up! Joshua
  2. AF, come down to Penns Landing at the Independence Seaport Museum on Saturday starting at 10A. The Philadelphia Ship Model Society is hosting a ModelCon. There will be ALOT of model ships, plus maybe you'll be interested to meet others who build ship models. Joshua
  3. Blue Jacket is about or has already released their new cross section of the Charles Morgan and I know they're working on the USS Oregon.
  4. Marc, That website appears to be down now, any chance you'd be willing to make a copy and send them to me? Joshua
  5. Ed Tosti's Young America Extreme Clipper Ship Model Practicum. Vol 1 & 2 Provides all the plans, drawings and PDF files to scratch build this impressive model. Includes 9 Sets of Plan Drawings, 2 Cd's Condition is unused, well kept. Decided that I'm going to stick to kit building. You can file the sale on Ebay http://ebay.us/K2B7AL?cmpnId=5338273189 I'd be willing to potentially negotiate the price here.
  6. Bob, Thanks for your continued detailed build log - i've taken a break from my PdN so I can reference your log later Joshua
  7. I've used Sharpie Markers to paint things black with happy results.
  8. it's a shame all these postings aren't making it to the correct thread of "So where do you do yours" even though I'm guilty of it myself!
  9. Actually, I spend probably half my time cleaning and putting things away because I get anxious when things aren't organized and clean. lol
  10. I work mostly out of my garage but at times will gather small projects to work on a fold out table in the living room so I can be close to my wife and daughter. The first pic is a little older than the subsequent two. Here's the garage. Best, Joshua
  11. Zappto, Any chance we could see the ship illuminated in a dimmer lit room? It'd be awesome to see how much of her is lit up now. I'm excited to see this finished!~ Joshua
  12. Bob, I hear ya with the struggles of this model. I've actually started to crutch off of a Syren kit someone had started but didn't finish in both parts and instructions. Both ships are American built 2 masted vessels of similar size of the same period and the kits were the same scale. Chuck's instructions have a lot more pictures and details especially around rigging the bow spirit, etc. I've given up on the instructions that came with the PDN and am relying heavily on Chappelle's drawings and Reed's book. The Syren came with photo etched parts for gun ports that I plan to use. The Syren's instructions are on the MicroMark website for download in PDF. Josh
  13. I live in S. Jersey, so you wouldn't have to ship albeit $400 is higher than I can afford to spend on that right now.
  14. Great progress so far! I have this kit as well and I also had the same reaction to the cut-away section in the hull. I also plan to just fully plank it solid. Joshua
  15. Just catching up on your build - i can't wait to see the cabin's lit up in the finished product. Josh
  16. The needle of glue also works on a bottle of zap, see? If the glue dries in the needle, hit it with a lighter but don't breath in the fumes On a side note, i don't know how you can work with this medium, i think i would find it rather frustrating...
  17. Another good resource may be this build log of a Flattie another member did, I thought he did a nice job and it's always helpful to see another's interpretation for some inspiration and/or understanding. http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/988-chesapeake-bay-flattie-by-teleman-intarsia-124-completed/?hl=flattie Good luck, I'll be keeping an eye on your progress. Just remember to have fun along the way, I'm working through my first wood kit build and things can get frustrating sometimes while you're learning. Josh
  18. Todd, If you're going to dive into buying any resource materials on ship history or modeling, you should check out abebooks.com. I got three of chappell's books for under $20 with shipping. They're donated library books and in awesome shape. Highly recommend checking out that site for book purchases. Josh
  19. Piet, You're lucky you don't live closer to me in New Orleans or I'd be knocking on your door for metal work lessons! Would be worth a week's vacation if you offered them. Josh
  20. I've been drawing a few ideas from Hopeful's Sharpie and then adding some things on my own. But yes, I attempted to do the creasing in scale and it's too small. I think I'm at the point of hand stitching it because my wife's machine is really letting me down at this poin with inconsistent stitches. I am by no means a seamstress and my wife's machine is a cheapy she uses to throw scrub hats together that she only generally wears a couple of times. Hard for me to expect that this machine will get me the perfect decorative stitching I'm shooting for. And I know all about having a locker of ships, I have 12 currently on the shelf... Josh.
