Thanks for taking the time to explain what you're doing here --- and why. Brake fluid is not bad. I sometimes need to free up a corroded model airplane engine and do that with antifreeze in the Admiral's crock pot. Makes the pot roast taste better Are you doing all of your painting with an airbrush? Deck looks terrific.

Darned cameras. I never would have seen that. I have an older camera with settings like 'make planking look good' and 'correct all right angles to 90 degrees'

Steps and fenders look great ---- nicely aligned. These little details do seem to take forever but really make her shine in the end. At some point in future you'll step back and thing 'Holy cow, I did that ????? '. Yup, you're doing it !

Your concern for potential damage is well founded. But then we face similar issues at the bow and along the channels. Occupational hazard. I did leave a few of the smallest details off of my transom for later deployment. I really do admire your balcony.

Both projects looking prim and proper. Hopefully the sea trials went well on the Pig.

Just one comment for those who mentioned they might consider a Swiss Pear deck. Personally, I love it. It's fairly easy to work with, holds a good edge. But even with just a natural stain finish, it has a distinctive, slightly dark color. It's like picking a paint for a room --- it might look good on a color sample but it turns out to look 'different' when the whole room is done. Take a look at Rustyj's scratch built Confed to see what I mean. I believe his is all boxwood --- and beautifully done: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/533-usf-confederacy-by-rustyj-completed/page-4 Choose carefully, my friends.

That puts me in second place, but still in the first row. Never had much luck with plastic when I was a tyke ..... be good to see how it's handled by a master! Smooth sailing, mate!

Truly going to miss the (almost) everyday progress on her. She's a spectacular example of what a working boat should look like. And scratched to boot. You deserve to be very proud, Denis. The details are simply phenomenal. I'll be looking forward to her 'reveal' in your gallery. And, I just need to ask ...... WHAT'S NEXT, mate ??

Nice work, John. Get on as many of the blocks etc. as you can before you start the standing rigging. Haven't seen silkspan in years! Someone should chime in though ..... there are quite a few ships with sails on MSW.

Time for an update and the celebration of a milestone. We've reached 1,000 hours into the build ! The planking of the quarter deck has been completed and some of the details (speaking tube, mizzen rail) added. The deck is planked only to the midline to allow some of the gun deck and great cabin work to be seen: The planking is, of course, Swiss Pear and the treesnails done with the 'drill and fill' method The finish is Natural stain under WOP. I'll provide some more detailed photos as the final details are added.

I'm glad John made the two comments that he did. To my eye there was something going on between the red and blue pins. I also second his motion to give it one good last look from the front. It's a matter of look and feel. Can't really describe it. Dan makes a good point on the garboard......not only the width, but the length up near the bow. Fair winds, my friend.

Congratulations on the completion of a beautifully crafted work of art. May she long stand as a tribute to your skills and to the memory of your Dad.

Hoping to hear how the treatment worked. Give it plenty of time to dry out. Wood likes to 'spring back' and fight with you.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
