  1. We are stuck with the Prarie Dogs out here in the West. But instead of one or two per square mile, they live in colonies of hundreds all over the place! Happily for MSW members, they enjoy attacking downed aircraft more than pilfering from the ships' store.
  2. Up here they are $24/pound, uncooked. You see, lobsters have a difficult time climbing up the sides of the Rocky Mountains
  3. OK, here you go. From that glimpse of the plans, it looks as if you've picked a formidable challenge for a build --- let alone scratch. But I'm certain of 2 things: it will be both a learning experience and will result in a model you'll be proud of. I'll just pull up a chair here....... Best of luck 'New builder'. Perhaps time for a new name????
  4. Nice fix on the title! No sense giving Skerry credit for 'stereo' builds (only Popeye gets that). No, can't say I've ever heard of that advanced degree. But with the pace of the business world these days it will probably come in handy. Best of luck on both the degree and the build!!!!!!
  5. Holy cow ...... MSW is on fire today. Thanks Sjors and Bob. Foremast -- no sails for me. As beautiful as they can be, I greatly prefer the clean look on a model. Floyd ---- I lost count after 500 Anja ---- thanks for approving my vacation request Thanks, Robert! Dan and Frank --- I don't sweat the snow. Had my backbone fused with $80,000 worth of titanium just for the occasion Ben ----- Chuck must have a HUGE family by now. And ANDY- stop pulling my leg. You can handle the rigging. Rumour has it even you-know-who can do it (but I've yet to see photos).
  6. Well, Josh, you've certainly gotten off to a flying start on this project! So far she looks pretty good to me. I'll leave it to your fellow WB builders to do the critique. I can say that I love the framing on this little boat and that the fact you've discovered that sandpaper is your friend is a good thing. As to soldering, there used to be a number of articles on MSW about that. Check under the 'search' heading. If not, tell us what you are trying to solder and some advice will magically appear. Oh, just one thing. The title of your log is just a bit confusing. I thought you were Skerry Amp!
  7. Very nice, clean work Andy. I can tell you're happy about beginning the masting. Enjoy being off the hook with you-know-who. You can always post a photo of the prototype knot you'll be using for the hammock netting if he gets impatient.
  8. Can we have a drum roll.........please!!!! The standing rigging has been completed !!!! :) In spite of a few ham-handed mishaps (see 'where the he_ _ did the Martingale go'), I think it went well. She is really taking on some character. For the very first time, she looks better in person than i the photos. But with Sjors looking on, ya gotta have pics. Let me know what you think as I take a break for a day or two to shovel out from the in-process blizzard: I am happy with the bowsprit as, just a few days ago, it looked like an explosion in a rubber band factory. I need to complement designer Chuck Passaro (again) for not only the intricacy of the layout but also for taking the time to explain everything so clearly in his Practicum. THANKS CHUCK! And here's my favorite shot OK, it's time to do some 'yardwork' and get the spars and yards together. I'm thinking I will leave them in a natural finish but not decided yet. After adding the dimensions of length and height into the ship, I look forward to now providing width Finally, thanks to everyone here on MSW for providing advice, encouragement and positive thoughts (you too, Sjors).
  9. Just dropping in on the dark side Larry. She is really shaping up. Say, if you're thinking of adding ballast keep in mind a layer of stones on the very bottom. They can look nice under the casks, etc. Carry on, mate
  10. At 1:96 I'm thinking breech lines might be all you want. She's looking really fine.
  11. Thanks, Mobbsie. Yes, it will be about a ship Don't tell me you missed the episode on animal life?????
  12. Transom looks great. Thanks for the blow-by-blow. Should come in handy for the folks that follow us.
  13. Sjors---- I am happy to report the next update has been completed ----- AHEAD of schedule. I have to wait for the camera shop to develop the film. May post by tomorrow.
  14. No, never have. I usually use varnish over stain. That said, I used to oil the wood on my full size sailboat years ago and it really looked nice....teak wood. The problem was it needed re-application because of the sun/rain. You shouldn't have that problem with your model Check out Kiwiron's latest build. I believe he's used multiple coats of oil on that and it was looking nice last time I looked (I think it's the Brig Supply).
  15. Patrick makes a good point on probably having a smooth stern is desirable. Yes, that shinkage can be a bear. You should see what happens up here at 5,000 foot elevation with an average humidity of less than 20%. Get your planks super dry before you set them!
  16. Hey, don't let rigging scare you. This is my first time through it and it's just FUN ----- filling up all that empty space with 'stuff'. I'll have an update tomorrow (don't tell anyone.......I just finished the standing rigging). Your skills that I'm seeing here will carry through to rigging......for SURE. Callie thanks you for the complement!
  17. Alex- I'm all for the oil treatment. Of course, you'll need to experiment first. My only question would be, will the oil finish stand up over time or will it naturally dull a bit as it's absorbed. Or do you intend to oil and then apply a protectant finish of some sort?
