  1. Based on my own experience with 1:1 sailboats, I agree with your thoughts. The full keel should allow for shallower draft and improved lateral stability. Don't forget to leave room for the batteries!
  2. At this stage I usually bring it down to about 220 grit. Just needs to be smooth for the planks. I think you'll like that little sander. Easy does it!
  3. Dynamic testing. We don't see that every day on MSW. Great job and thanks for the photos.
  4. Shaping up nicely. Sandpaper is your friend! Best of the Holidays to you and yours as well.
  5. Good to see her again Mark. Best of the Holidays to you and yours.
  6. Can't wait to see the harpoon tips. Say, doesn't she carry 7 whale boats????? Merry Christmas to you Texans!
  7. I'll just be tinkering with boxwood here and there Harley. I'm sticking with the basswood for the outer hull.....there's a ton of it in the kit. But I've got some different wood for the decks. That's a ways off. And since you mentioned it, Best of the Holidays to all my friends on MSW!
  8. Takes some time to get back in the ratline 'groove'. Patience, as always, my friend!
  9. Good to hear from you, Wolf. Great start on the launch ..... she'll be head and shoulders above the cast metal version. I've had ship's boats in both natural and white. They both look good. So I guess it's 'Capn's choice' ---- and you're the Captain!
  10. Never thought of making lines on the false deck (duh!). Nice butt shift, great looking wood. Best of the Holidays to yours and yours, Bob.
  11. Don't know that I'll ever need to use it but thanks for detailing that 'stack them up then soak apart' tip Grant. Never seen that before.
  12. That's my understanding, Eamonn. And since they didn't use water, like a submarine, it must have been one heck of a job.
  13. Another small update. The additional planks for the first layer of the main wales have been added. In addition, the sweep ports have been made and installed. I used some boxwood I had for these that I got from Jeff @ HobbyMill. Really nice stuff. Holds a good edge. Also fabricated the ballast ports, this time using basswood. It's the larger port in the center. Sanded her down pretty smooth and will now add the 2nd layer of the channel wales after which I will be ready to apply the first coat of stain. The 2nd layer of the main wales will be added after that as those are to be painted.
  14. That's a good set of eyes there, Len. Looking at Gil's great work I didn't notice it. Could be a really fine idea !!
  15. We all have our own methods I guess. I just use a stick the width of the space I want and play with the lanyards until the tension is right.
  16. Sorry Grant......can't possibly work. Too simple!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Certainly beats the wire 'claw' used to hold the deadeyes together for the same purpose.
  17. Joe is right about battleship cove. Just near Fall River, MA they have several WWII ships moored there for the public. The Massachusetts is one, and I think there's a fleet sub. Haven't been there for 30 years so they may have a lot more by now. Some great Portuguese restaurants in Fall River as well.
  18. Beautiful job. And fear not ---- I have the finishing sequence duly recorded on a paper towel wrapped around my guns for if and when I ever get that far.
