  1. Probably best to wait on the new wood. I know it's hard. Any other parts of the build you can work on in the meanwhile?? Good hearing from you.
  2. Just be careful or you'll sand right through the planking right down to the bulkheads. Since you have another layer of planking you're still ok. You may wish to try some filler in the low spots before you break out the sandpaper.
  3. That's a really beautiful photo looking through the stern in the sunlight. But what is that 'spaghetti factory' 2 points off the port bow?
  4. I didn't realize she'd be carrying one of those older style bowsprits. Nice! Happy New Year, Daniel
  5. Sometimes I forget just how big your rendition is. Looking at carriages just reminded me. Beautiful work on the eyebolts and cleats as well.
  6. There is also a fine model of her at the North Carolina Battleship (BB-55) Memorial in Wilmington, NC.
  7. Thanks everyone for the kind words. Sjors - yes, 8 coats was enough......for now. I think Ben used 20 but it was some voodoo concoction of India Ink and fireplace ashes. Beyond me! Charley - no planking classes. This is the easy part. I'm stalling on the lower hull planking as long as possible. Jim - Our years here are longer than yours Andy- yes, I'll be painting some of the upper portion of the hull as well. Mark - I was thinking about using ebony but some guy in the Pacific Northwest complained about using it so much that I gave up the idea.
  8. Firstoff, a HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone on MSW. May health, wealth and good building be in store for all! Thought I'd start the year with a small update. The planking of the upper hull has been completed with the addition of the second layers for the main and channel wales. In addition, the main wales have been painted........8 coats of diluted MS acrylic black. It's got the slightest bit of sheen to it but I'll address that later: Here's a close up. The strake just above the black main wale is the 'black strake' which, for some reason, is not black. It is thinner than the wale so it makes for a nice detail. The wales and black strake have been tapered and contoured into one another so the edge is nice and neat. Thanks to Bob (Rafine) for mentioning the fact that he paints the edges of the wales before putting them on. That really simplifies the painting: The next step will be treenailing the outer hull. I'll be using the 'drill and fill' technique. I need to get the right color on the filler and determine the pattern before proceeding. Once that's done a second coat of stain will be applied to darken the upper hull....then more painting etc. FUN STUFF OK, let's see your latest !!!!!
  9. Mobbsie broke a piece? This sound like the dog ate my homework. But still, great to see her on the ways.
  10. Let the long awaited voyage begin ! Tell Anja she's going to need a bigger boat.
  11. Hey, nice clamp Yup those extra fillers go in at, I believe FR 2, 7 and 13. Check against the plans where the mast holes go. I put them in myself (couldn't hurt). Happy New Year!
  12. Not sure about steel wool on that paint. Like everything else you need to try it off-line. 1200 grit paper might do the trick. I have the same problem with MS 'hull/spar black'. Just a bit too much shine. And the best of the New Year to you and yours.
  13. Uh,oh. I have a feeling Sjors is going to receive some retribution down the road for his last post.
  14. That ebony sounds like a bear to work with. Nevertheless, she is impressive. Happy New Year to you and yours out there.
  15. Making a few of us happy as well. If you do need to resort to gluing the slats on the painted deck, you could try pricking some very small holes through the paint so the glue can penetrate. This should hold the slats well as there are really no stresses on them. I know ---- more tedium. But it does work reasonably well.
  16. Looking very nice my friend. But there's still 42 hours left in 2013......plenty of time for another update!
  17. Are you using a pre-stain on your basswood? I've found that helps to even out the color.
