    Hey Rod - thanks for dropping in on my build and alerting me to this one. I probably would have continued to miss it. Good idea 'heaving to' for a bit on the tall ships. They can take over quickly and the whole house needs to be on board before you invest 3 years of time. Oh.....nice Eindecker. I've got one myself. 62" with a .72 four stoke engine in her and she flies like a dream. I bet yours will as well once you get her trimmed out. Don't put too many turns in that rubber for the trimming flites As to this new baby........I didn't know Ferrari was into hydroplanes. But the styling really is something. As you're building her for static you can go all out on the trimings and not be afraid of getting them knocked off. Looks like just a super kit and, having followed your Syren, I know you'll do her proud. Two things come to mind. First, mahogany can be tricky. I had it for decking on my Ulises Tug and found it to be a little brittle on the edges. I think Hipex commented on this as well in his Constitution log. Just takes a little more TLC,,,,but it produces a great finish. The other thing is the nails or brads for the planking. These were also called for in my tug kit ---- I didn't use them. Supposedly you put them in to hold the planking and then sand off the heads. I couldn't do it. Perhaps others have been successful but sanding metal without ruining the wood didn't seem to be the way to go for me. Just give it some thought before you commit. I just used standard planking technique with PVA. I think it was Moonbug who did a great job with mahogany on a Chris Craft runabout --- you might want to take a look. I'm sure it's in the Gallery. Good luck getting that Ferrari Red just right. I know you can pull that off! And I'll be pulling up a chair!

    Yes, you don't want the plates floating off in the current. I am going to try that one coat of dullcoat on the next coppered one though....that will be a while off.

    Looks like a plan on the display area. Don't wait too long on the Plexiglas! Say, if you'd like, I'll send you my 1/4 scale Piper Cub with a wingspan of 108". You can display that on your coffee table for a bit. Then the ships won't look so obtrusive

    First rate work, Bob. I thought about the gloves as well Bob. But when I was finished I just wiped here down with IPA (91%). After 2 years there is just a slow darkening with no uneven spots or fingerprints at all.

    Yup, those will work as well. Untrimmed ratlines are twice the length of the vessel @ 1:1250 ! Looking good.

    Jud is right. I think the classic problem is a closed binful of stain laden rags that sits around, generates heat and then ignites. Just let them dry.

    That looks really nice Sam. The only question I'd have is will the dullcoat keep the copper from darkening over time? I coppered my Syren with the tape about 2 years back and she's finally starting to darken on her own and most of the shine has dulled ..... she originally looked like a showroom new '57 Buick. Let's see where Bob takes his.

    Overlap looks perfect. Let me go get my sunglasses. Never used Dullcoat over copper. Be interested to see if you decide to go that route.

    Nice job on the planking Larry. Get her sanded then step back and admire what you've accomplished. You should be proud.....and I'm smiling over here. Good idea on the epoxy. Tightens everything up. I'll bet she feels like a Louisville Slugger by now! WELL DONE

    Larry - This jig is new to me. There wasn't one with Syren. Frank - Since I'm using the kit-supplied 1/8 x 1/16" wood I won't be doing actual spiling from wider planks (although I may work in some 3/16 in the stern). New cutting board has been procured (along with dinner, no flowers). Seas have subsided
