Pantograph to enlarge plans
druxey replied to Sambini's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Pantographs were originally used for enlarging sketches, not scale drawings. As remarked already, scan and print to the size you need is far more accurate and reliable! -
Am I correct in my recollection of reading somewhere that a flute or fife-like instrument was used to keep time, not a drum?

Very ingenious mechanism for the three banks of oars, Richard! Must have been fun calculating the 'throw' and stroke rate relative to the motor rpm. Is that ramming speed? And a very nicely crafted model as well.

I find that a shallower cone angle improves the lay-up of the line. Looking good, though!

I think that the arrangement would be similar to your illustration, right hand side, across the box. The access would be from the inboard side, with only a single head per compartment.

Planking the hull
druxey replied to shortgrass's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
You will also find bending techniques Chuck uses as well as other ways to bend planks in the tutorials. I haven't used pins or clamps in years! -
I believe that the compartments for the heads continued inside the boxes or sponsons, bringing them closer over the shafts. Another consideration I seem to recall from reading years ago was the issue of trapped air inside the sponsons if they were too tight to the wheels.

Go to the pinned planking tutorials on this site, shortgrass! All you need to know is there for you and everybody else. -
Slog: I have just stumbled across your log for the first time. Superb work! I'd click 'like' on every entry, but it would take too long. Please assume that I did click each one.

If I may add; it is an established fact that the heads were often on each side of the boxes on side paddle steamers.

Looking at your photos, the boxes do extend that far inboard it appears.

I think that the clue is/are the small deckhouses attached to the inboard portions of the wheel boxes fore and aft. These are, I believe, the heads that discharge directly down inboard of the wheels.

You will experience frustration tying hairs to a toothpick, because you will never get the hairs to come to a good point (which a quality sable will) and the hairs will not have the correct 'spring', which sable does. Yes, the top quality brushes are not cheap, but with care will last decades. I have 20 year (or older) brushes still working well for me!

Placement of topsail topgallant and royal
druxey replied to Barbara's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
Usually when the sails are furled or taken down, the yards are in their lowered positions. -

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
