I've read of many instances of early engine boiler explosions. I didn't understand the mechanism that caused this, though. Thanks for the clear explanation, Andy. This is one of the most educational and interesting threads on this site. Thanks, gentlemen!

Shot Locker
druxey replied to AntonyUK's topic in Discussion for a Ship's Deck Furniture, Guns, boats and other Fittings
Imagine a door or access at the foot of the locker. Open it, and an avalanche of shot would pour out. Not a Good Idea. Also, remember that most of the hold surrounding the locker would be filled with barrels etc. If the locker were reasonably full, a sailor could lean in to retrieve and pass out shot. -
Sorry to read of your flooding. Hopefully your new place is going to be all you want and need.

Those look very nice now, Toni! Good going. Cup burrs are not well known amongst the model-making crowd, but are extremely useful. I was using one earlier today to round off the ends of steering wheel spoke handles.

Good digging and rational explanation! However, I can't for the life of me see the difference in the two partial deck plans you've posted. Am I missing something?

The official "Talk like a Pirate Day" was several weeks ago, I believe. Nicely done, Dan: especially the 'rusty nail' appearance. Should keep Pirate Pete happy, for a while, at least!

Thanks, Dan. I know that often spilling is done by eye at 1:1, but I've never seen it done entirely that way - never mind well! - at scale size. I certainly don't plank mathematically, but use that as a starting point. Then I do the 'by eyeball' thing.

I'm impressed at the result you've achieved 'spiling by eye'. I would not have thought it possible, but you've certainly demonstrated otherwise! My only comment is that the frames seem a bit wide to my own eye.

Angle grinders! Orbital sanders! Oh my! Hopefully the later stages of construction will not be quite so brutal. All the best with this new project.

Looking good, Toni. To get a smoother bolt 'head', have you tried using a small cup burr? Another technique is to use a blunt knife and roll it across the wire to form a small head. Someone recently posted an illustrated 'how to' of this on MSW.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
