Interesting way to build and provide a planking surface (if I read that right) for the hull. Looking good and smooth..

Thanks Kevin. I've done my due diligence and if I have to... it's white I'm hoping my planking will look good enough without paint.

Thanks for the comments and likes. I'm holding off on the paint for now. I'm going to use the swiss pear I have for planking as it's more uniform and a tad darker in color than the kit provided wood. If things turn south and I'm not happy with the wood... fill and paint will be the order of the day. Back to the second layer of planking......

Back 10 and punt time... I've lined the hull off for planking and realized an "oops" at the counter. One side of the counter (actually not the whole side, just part of it) extends "above" (hull upside down) about a smidgen... maybe not much but it's bugging me. I think a bit paint when I do the wales and paint will hide it but I may just remove the counters and reglue them. Also sorting out my wood choices for the 2nd layer.. pear from the kit, swiss pear from my stock, or just do the pear and paint. Decisions, decisions. And there's a few areas which need spot filling. Digging out the sawdust and glue..... One question.... was "white stuff" actually pure white? I thought I read somewhere it actually a very pale yellow.

Wonderful work, Steven and as always, you give good lessons on the history of the ships you build.

I see you are in L.A. Head to a local gun shop as they usually have the Birchwood Casey products.

Tom, open a build log in the kit area. It's a great way to get help and also to meet other modelers.

A lot of what would be considered no-no's today were available back then. Remember the chemistry sets? There was also one for "atomic" which included some uranium as I recall. Might explain why I am what I am today.... though not sure about the model ship builder part of my life.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
