  1. Interesting way to build and provide a planking surface (if I read that right) for the hull. Looking good and smooth..
  2. Thanks Kevin. I've done my due diligence and if I have to... it's white I'm hoping my planking will look good enough without paint.
  3. Good advice. I'm currently the other way around.. minimal spray and mostly brushes. I even used brushes on the CH-53 and it came out well. I think if I were to go full steam into heavy painting, I'd opt for an air brush, but mentally, I just can't justify it.
  4. Thanks for the comments and likes. I'm holding off on the paint for now. I'm going to use the swiss pear I have for planking as it's more uniform and a tad darker in color than the kit provided wood. If things turn south and I'm not happy with the wood... fill and paint will be the order of the day. Back to the second layer of planking......
  5. Just marvelous. Pity about the scored lines. I'm not sure what we as builders can do to bring them out.
  6. I moved this to the appropriate area.
  7. Back 10 and punt time... I've lined the hull off for planking and realized an "oops" at the counter. One side of the counter (actually not the whole side, just part of it) extends "above" (hull upside down) about a smidgen... maybe not much but it's bugging me. I think a bit paint when I do the wales and paint will hide it but I may just remove the counters and reglue them. Also sorting out my wood choices for the 2nd layer.. pear from the kit, swiss pear from my stock, or just do the pear and paint. Decisions, decisions. And there's a few areas which need spot filling. Digging out the sawdust and glue..... One question.... was "white stuff" actually pure white? I thought I read somewhere it actually a very pale yellow.
  8. Wonderful work, Steven and as always, you give good lessons on the history of the ships you build.
  9. I was turning cannon at one point and did for the Triton project among others like my Constellation. More trouble than it's worth these days.
  10. Welcome to MSW, Alex.
  11. I see you are in L.A. Head to a local gun shop as they usually have the Birchwood Casey products.
  12. I tend to buy, rope, blocks, deadeyes, and cannon for my scratch ships. I have a rope walk and intend on using it... someday.
  13. Tom, open a build log in the kit area. It's a great way to get help and also to meet other modelers.
  14. A lot of what would be considered no-no's today were available back then. Remember the chemistry sets? There was also one for "atomic" which included some uranium as I recall. Might explain why I am what I am today.... though not sure about the model ship builder part of my life.
  15. I agree with you, Alan. I just went to the site you posted and wow... large and busy. I still like what OC is doing.. one small part of a large battlefield and done very well.
