  1. I'd go with the medium and soft types. I end using just the soft though. I just went through that myself and ended up a Michaels as we don't have Blicks. I managed to get sable there. The sable for soft would be about perfect, IMO.
  2. Is this a saw or thicknesser? If it's a thickness sander, your grit may be too rough. If it's a saw, check that the blade's teeth aren't offset and also go for a higher tooth count. Here's a good reference for table saws and blades and even though it's for the Byrnes it's very helpful for other saws. https://modelshipworld.com/topic/23843-byrnes-saw-reference-also-good-for-other-desktop-hobby-saws/
  3. One of our Ukraine members (if I remember right) basically builds his models to be shipped with removable masts and rigging and then goes onsite to uncrate and put the rigging and masts into place. As for most shippers.... they hire the cheapest labor they can get.
  4. I'm glad it went well, Marc. Take the time off you need as burn-out is tough to recover from. Druxey, we're paranoid about everything lately.
  5. Congratulations Tom. Very well done on the model and very deserved n the award.
  6. Looks good. And as many of us know, masking tape is your friend.
  7. Mike, I hope you'll do build logs for these ships. Looks impressive.
  8. Grumpy and eccentric is an understatement. Some of practicums aren't bad. Others seem to be rather haphazard with bits and bad bits. I'd use the build logs here as primary reference and his book more as an overview. Personally, I wouldn't waste my money on them based upon what I've seen. Oh.. and he goes ballistic if try to sell the book as he claims you can't legally do that.

  10. How was the show, Marc. I hope you had a great time and your ship got a lot of attention which you and it deserve.
  11. I think the part in the water doubled as a ram. The French and others did several like that before they realized that the "new" ships would never close and board.
  12. We were talking? Oh.. hmm.... Oh well, it'll come back to me around 3 in the morning.
  13. Maybe this is the one I'm thinking of..... https://twistedsifter.com/2012/08/30ft-model-replica-battleship-admiral-graf-spee-william-terra/
  14. I recall seeing a video of a battleship that could be driven about a lake. Might have been that one. He towed on a special trailer and also lent it out to places for promotional reasons, etc. Might have been that ship.
  15. I believe there's a museum that has folks doing some work. Maybe just mapping the wreck and a bit of recovery.
  16. No need to stand in the corner, OC. We've all done the same thing.
  17. Thanks for following along, everyone. More of a proof of life and just a minor update after a busy week. I took my planking fan and sorted out how the strips need to be shaped. Then started gluing them with school white glue together in stacks of 15. Once the glue dried, I shaped each stack with my mini belt sander and once done, put them in water to soak and be separated. I've started planking. About 6 strakes so far on each side. A bit of luck and the first layer should be ready for sanding either tomorrow night or Monday. I'm believing I'll have to do minor filler after sanding. <fingers crossed)
  18. Welcome to MSW, RA. You might go to the top of the page and look at "Group Projects" for ideas. Some are kits, some are "semi-kits" and some are scratch.
  19. Sorry to hear about your being under the weather. To answer your question, I use rubber cement. It's easily removed by rubbing the surface.
  20. If you haven't done this, I urge you to.... Test the scanners/printers against the original. Scanners and printers for a long time have not done exactly 100% copies. They're off by as much as 2-3% for each machine to prevent counterfeiting of money. I've run into this in the past and now use a local architectural print service.
  21. Yeah... I'll have to move fast as winter is coming. I'll also take some appropriate materials to do some underwater basket weaving for relaxation.
  22. Beautifully done, Rik. The paint work sets everything off nicely.

  24. Ah... got it on the grooves. The power lead screw is what I have and one has to be quick to disengage it. Your skill is showing on the parts inspite of the "low end" lathe. Mine is low end also but for my purposes it works well.
