Hello from the foothills in North Carolina
mtaylor replied to Tewhano's topic in New member Introductions
Welcome to MSW. When the kit comes, open a build log. It's the best way to get help and meet others. The captain's motto is a good one to follow. -
Thanks for the likes and comments. I've started sanding and will take my time and not rush it. I know I'll have gap fill but I'm ready for that. On this step as Willie Nelson would say: "It's been fun and it's been real. But it ain't been real fun.". On the bright side, it was a good lesson to re-learn on first planking.

Indeed on the appointed hour and family should come first before models.

Putting a render here won't be off topic since it is part of the Charles Martel. Also, it fits in with "methods" for building the model.

I think that banging one's head on the wall is actually part of model shipbuilding. Don't we all have bruised foreheads from either banging the wall or facepalming?

I do the same as you... make stick, glue some sandpaper down. Also the same grits. The other thing for sanding I use a lot is those disposable finger nail files. They're flexible and come in many grits.

Planking Question
mtaylor replied to Malazan's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
First two photos didn't come down the pipe, Roger. They're links to nowhere. -
Update. The hull has it's first planking in place. Well, almost. I just ripped off two planks on the side not shown due to them coming loose. A bit of re-glue will fix and then tomorrow I'll start sanding. I believe that what happened was I wasn't as careful lining off the hull and the errors magnified themselves by the time I got to the keel. Lesson learned, sharper pencil and more patience needed.

mtaylor replied to Baker's topic in Non-ship/categorised builds
Bingo! Spot on. Things haven't changed much in that regard since the earliest times in history. -
Greeetings from Italy, Sardinia Island
mtaylor replied to Ugo Crisponi's topic in New member Introductions
Welcome to MSW, Ugo. Beautiful work on the figures and gun. If you would like to, open a log on your carronade. We would love to see it. -
Rotary tool recommendations, preferences
mtaylor replied to Steve116's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
For "light work", take a look at the WeCheer WE-242. It's small, variable speeds, but not much torque. Takes all the Dremel collets. I like it over the Dremel as I don't feel the weight of it but the "feel" of what's being shaped. -
Photographing your models
mtaylor replied to Patrick Matthews's topic in Photographing your work. How to do this.
I'll move this to the photo forum since that would probably be the best place. -
Fascinating stuff on these printers. It's voodoo to me but I guess time to start reading up a bit.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
