Cutty Sark by NenadM
mtaylor replied to NenadM's topic in - Build logs for subjects built 1851 - 1900
What did you use for the hooks, Nenad? You mentioned staples. They look very good. Lovely photography. As for another hobby... don't worry about it. Hobbies sort themselves out. I think I'm down to about 20 at this point.- 4,152 replies

I don't believe for a minute there will be laughter at mistake and questions. We've all been there.

Degluing
mtaylor replied to Zooker's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
I must be doing it wrong then. For wood glue, alcohol. For CA... acetone seems to work. -
Is there a trick to making deadeyes?
mtaylor replied to Schooners's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
The video is from a scratch builder here on MSW. Here's his log: https://modelshipworld.com/topic/20825-le-fleuron-1729-by-kudin-148-scale-kudin-andrey-youtube/ There might be english subtitles on it as he's started adding them at some point. -
kit review USS Missouri (or any Iowa class) 1/350 by Joy Yard
mtaylor replied to Tigerdvr's topic in REVIEWS: Model kits
Arild, I'd suggest that you start a build log in the Kit area. That let's us look over your shoulder and also gives you a way to get help.- 51 replies

Just a bit of an update.... one is one of those little things just bug the heck out of you.. The plans show the main mast coat area with eyebolts on gundeck. It's bugged me since I couldn't figure out how the rigging would reach it. A bit of research on other sites, shows it needs to be on the weather deck. Much foul language ensued while fixed it. The major work was adding ribbing. I just need to add the port sills and sort out the stern and then... sanding.

Lighthouse by Nirvana - FINISHED - Metal Earth - METAL
mtaylor replied to Nirvana's topic in Non-ship/categorised builds
Lovely work, Per. I've found PE isn't for me. Just can't handle the tiny stuff even with magnificaton. -

Welcome to MSW, Dale. Looking forward to seeing your log.

Well, when you pick a kit, open a build log. It's a good way to get help and meet folks. Also ask questions, if need be in logs for the same kits.

Being a newbie
mtaylor replied to Edwardkenway's topic in How to use the MSW forum - **NO MODELING CONTENT**
What Chris said. And I'll add if a newbie is someone who's learning... we're all newbies because we never stop learning. -
See my last post to you: in Shore Leave and Non-Nautical area. In there are planes, cars, trains, buildings, etc.
-
Welcome to MSW. Sorry to hear about the fire. I hope everyone got out ok.
-
Indeed, you can do that. Also, your buildings can be upload in Shore Leave in the Non-Nautical area.

There's a lot of on line places. I use some myself for translation many times. The ones suggested are pretty good. And I'll add one more: http://southseas.nla.gov.au/refs/falc/contents.html This is Falconers' Dictionary of the Marine. If you'd prefer to have a hard copy, look for a used copy (or new) of Wolfram zu Mondfeld's Historic Ship Models. I find it very handy to have in shop when I don't feel like firing up the computer.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
