Advice needed - model ship made by my Grandad
mtaylor replied to Stee F's topic in New member Introductions
Welcome to MSW. I'm in agreement with the others on your grandfather's ship. You didn't say where you are so specific recommendations on finding a new home her will hard. I'd suggest you check with your local library as many of them love to have things like this to excite readers (particularly young ones). -

Keith, I just learned something from you. I never knew they had breech loading Parrots. For some reason, I thought they were all muzzle loaded.

I asked this in a similar topic but no answers..... I'm just curious, is there anyplace left that will sell boxwood in a size less than a huge billet? Even a 2X4 is too large for me to mill. I'm not looking for a large quantity just a few sheets for my stock. Preferably in the States since there would be less problems.

MRAP ATV by CDW - FINISHED - Rye Field - 1:35 Scale
mtaylor replied to CDW's topic in Non-ship/categorised builds
Wow... a real coil spring. That is something I've not seen in plastic before. Denis, I think one of the old Ford GT40 had those metal springs or it might have one of Ferrari GT racers back then. I forget which as I did a bunch of the LeMans type cars. -
Welcome to MSW, Halfdan.

So that's what Hannibal has been up to... he's an oarsman. Restricted diet I hope... like non-human.

Ready made sails are usually way out of scale, Matthew. Too thick, seams too large, etc. What many do is use silkspan and make their own. There's several discussions here: https://modelshipworld.com/forum/16-masting-rigging-and-sails/ When you go to that subforum, use the search feature and limit to that sub forum. You'll find a lot of information.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
