Crap... missed the mast steps. Jerry, I think many of us, myself included, are learning a lot from the R/C builds even though we'll never build one. Now about the firing pivot guns.... a plan forming for that?

Thanks for the comments and the "likes". Keeps me motivated. I don't know about courage, David. It just needed to be done and I figured the sooner the better in case something went south. I have visions of the Dremel stand coming loose and wiping out the keel and framing. The first one was "heart in mouth". The second hole, I managed to breathe. Metal is a whole different critter, isn't it? I've done my share of hand machining and I find I like dealing with wood a whole better. Pure coffee at the time of the picture Kester. Irish coffee after everything had been taken down and put away.

Try checking your local office supply store. They usually sell all kinds of desk lamps and drafting table lamps. Many are clamp type, others have a base. They also have different adjustments and bulb types. I have 4 lamps in my workshop. One is a utility type under the cabinet (kitchen type) over my lathe. The other three are adjustable, one magnifier, one with a clamp base at my mill and table saw and the last sits on it's base over by build table. I can move it where I need it.

Well... I meant water with the full compliment of sails and R/C gear. Mast steps appear to be plywood.

Thanks, Michael. And you're right... there's always a way. We just have to find it. Sam, I wish I could help you on the solvents but short of your driving north, they can't even be shipped to California. Hmm... new career path... smuggling tolulene into California.

Minor step but for me a scary one. Rather than put off drilling holes for the mounting bolts and pedestals, I chose to grab the beast by the horns and go for it now. That way if something went really amiss, it would be fixable. So, I set the ship under the riser on the workbench, grabbed my Dremel drill press and proceed to cobble a way. I rotated it around, clamped and screwed it to the riser. It took a good 10 minutes of fiddling to get everything centered up and squared away. After inserted a very small bit, I held my breath and drilled. And it worked like a charm. I turned the ship around and repeated for the forward hole. Took a picture for posterity's sake. The pedestals fit nicely and the screw didn't do any damage.

Just beautiful, Mark. The figurehead is magnificent finish. I'm looking forward to the Lady Anne and the cross-section. -

Hi Mat, Welcome to MSW. There's one other build log out there: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/6261-uss-constellation-by-jlheureux-al-185/ Mine won't count since it's a heavy bash and there's a scratchbuild but it's not at all like the kit. Start a build log when you're ready in the kit area. It will be the fastest way to get help and encouragement.

Thanks for the "likes" and comments, everyone. I forgot to mention the 4 mm hex-head wrench too. My lady figures the prosthetist can build it, and I can tweak the fit and functionality. He tends to agree with her. So... I got hired. Thank you for the feedback. I may not find and fix all the errors, but I will try. I'm waiting for the Belle-Poule monograph now for insight into the details of things.

Change the story to keep the Marine ouf of trouble.. he was shooting at the rat who came up out of the hold. (I'm wondering how many remember the rat.)

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
