  1. Jud, You have good plan. What others have done is to use the starch and fan method instead of laying them flat to dry. Or, lay them over an appropriately shaped mold... basketballs, beach balls, buckets. Some even hang them such that they dry in the shape they want. The other one I saw (Hubert's site maybe?) showed fine wire being sewn into the edge of the sail and shaped with the sail then being sprayed with hairspray, I think. There's about as many ways as there those who put sails on their ships.
  2. Impressive in bending, fitting, and final install. Looks great. I too am surprised that the edge bending worked but it gives me some things to ponder.
  3. Beautiful rebuild on that grating, Doris. I think it looks great.
  4. I'm thinking the same as John.. improve? Improve what????? Looks fantastic.
  5. Beautiful work, Meridith. I agree that wood colors look good and Russ and Hamilton have some good suggestions. Er.. on the photo upload.. it's IE11 that's causing the issue. Use Chrome (which I see you did), Firefox, or roll IE back to 10. I did notice that ones you uploaded to your server show that they reside there. Which may be a bad thing if your sever ever crashes or you close your account all of your pictures will disappear. Uploaded to MSW is usually preferred since people close accounts, etc. and next thing is we have readers screaming that the pictures are gone.
  6. Ulises, Give some thought to pre-bending those beams before gluing. I'd soak them and the put them into position (maybe help by drying with a hairdryer. Also check that you're not pushing the tops of the bulkheads apart. I'd want to release as much stress as possible to prevent further problems.
  7. Spyglass, I thought I read somewhere here that isopropyl alcohol works on cleaning up epoxy but only while it's "wet". Once it sets, you're up the proverbial creek without the proverbial paddle.
  8. Looks like the worst of the "grunt" work is over for that door. And it looks like it's home and comfy. Now it's just "fix up, paint up, and beautify" as an old Sgt. Major once put it. I know.. you have the other side door to do...
  9. Sam, Using Google Translate, I went from skittle in English to quille in French. Which gave me these in English: keel, skittle, nog, pin, tenpin, tenpins So, it's not really the candy...
  10. John, Hmm.... can you copy/paste the image from a photo viewer?
  11. Ouch is right. One thing I've found about gold leaf.. it's a pain in the tuckus and moreso for tiny details. You did a great job with it. If you want to get away from using the real thing, Michael's carries some gold leaf paints in various gold colors. Very thin and they do a nice job of coverage.
  12. Go Sjors, Go!!!! Looking good. I'd jump up and down and cheer you on but Popeye has the pom-poms.
  13. Great looking saw, Vivian. I hope you have much fun with it for many years to come. LED's can be tricky but it sounds like you figured out the cause and how to fix it. It's all a learning process and you have done well.
  14. Bruno, I never would have thought it was kit. Sam... keel though in this case, it's specifically the stem. I had to do a reverse translation. Thank you Doris. Coming from you, I'm more than honored.
  15. Excellent research. I have a mental image of you dickering with the desk clerk and manager about buying one of those compass timbers.
  16. Have fun at Port Macquarie. That was an interesting method of making hinges but they turned out beautifully.
  17. John, See this: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/3196-how-to-add-image-to-your-signature/?hl=signature
  18. Beautiful... I just spent the best part of an hour looking at your latest update. Wow.
  19. I don't know about patience.. stubbornness maybe. I have learned to sit back and take things one day a time though. Beautiful pictures. Is that the 52 gun version from 1702?
  20. Beautifully stunning work, Alex. The colors, wood choices, and carvings bring it alive.
  21. Nenad, The wood and the ship are patient. It's us builders who aren't. Do what you need to do and hopefully find some fun on a road trip or just in some words with friends during your labors. We'll be here.
  22. Cristiano, Some of us are more "heretic' than others.. I just have to look to myself for proof of that. Evolving is probably better than trashing and starting over.
  23. Very true. That parts something that we usually overlook and I'm sure some the sailors way back when did also when they saw the officers eating roasted chickens and drinking a good wine whle they ate something boiled.
  24. I like it. Yes, PVA and water or matte clear acrylic for those lines. Only comment is that the breeching rope needs to be a bit longer or the gun won't slide back on recoil.
