HMS Agamemnon by Henke - Caldercraft - 1:64

Recommended Posts

My last post is from April. I have not stopped building but my mother in-law has fallen terminally ill and she has taken most of my and my wife's attention the last couple of months. This is the update for now. The stern is coming together and have been working with gun port lids on lower gun deck.

Dear friends,

I have come to the section of the building instructions called Hull side fittings. My question is about the chess tree fittings, item 138 below. It is far too long compared to the drawing.

1. Which side of it should be up?

2. Should it be shortened? If so, which end?

Instructions say it will need filing to sit on the side of the hull correctly because of the upper wale and slotted strip/brass profile. I have not done that yet. Please help me out on this? I suppose the slot is for a sheave or pulley wheel. My upper wale is perhaps 1-2 mm off-set compared to the drawing but the drawing is 1:1 and when I compare the chess tree piece 138 to the indicated length in the drawing it is far from right.

Henke,

Is there any indication of where the slots is to be on the drawings?

It might be that your chess tree piece is just oversized.

Knowing where the slot is on the plans and you should be able to sand the piece to correct size.

Or create a new piece from scrap wood using the measurements from the plan.

Good luck and I know you will find your way to make this correct.

Lycka till!

Thanks Bill, Ian, Mort and Per for nice comments and good suggestions. I think I now know. A look at some other Agamemnon build logs gave me some clues and a good look at one of the rigging plans solved it. The chess tree piece with its slot, which in reality has a sheave or pulley wheel in it is for the main sail tack. I have now glued it in place as shown below and cut off the top. The tacks which are to be fixed on the inside of upper gun deck need to be fixed before main deck is laid. I have to remember that!

Have been working on bits and pieces over the week. I added gun lids to upper gun deck, some decoration to the quarter gallery and the balcony railing on the stern. The balcony railing was fiddly but finally I got it in place.

This weekend I have been doing channels. Very fiddly if you ask me. To  make them sturdy I drilled two holes on the back side towards the hull in which I put two nails backwards into the edge of the channel. Then I gently pushed the channels towards the hull to create a small punch mark. I drilled 0.7 mm holes as guidance. This way it is possible to try out the correct position. Twice I actually drilled new holes 2-3 mm aside to get a better position. Anyhow the edge of the channel hides the old holes.

What isn't a fiddly business at 1:64?

Haven't said it before, but I think the stern galleries came out really nice. Good job Henke!

Keep it up!

Happy modelling!

Thanks for all likes and comments and particular to Håkan. We are many who like 1:64 scale. When building a large ship like Agamemnon it is a nice trad-off between detailing and physical size.

And now some pictures of this weeks progress. I have been working on the channels and the final detailing of the stern gallery (starboard side). Starboard side is almost finished.

Starboard side is almost finished. I decided sometime ago that I would do sides in turns. Now port side...... I know it will be boring but at least there is some activity in my build log. This weekend´s work has been quarter galleries.

Very nice Henrik! Quick question, did you 'glaze' the windows with clear plastic or leave them open? Not sure what to do there...

Hi Trent,

I have chosen not to glaze the windows. There is black plastic with the kit for glazing but I have chosen not to use it. The window frames are airbrushed white which gives them a sharp a clean look. The inside of the galleries is painted dull black. You have to look very close to see there is no glazing. There is also a risk you mess up the window frame painting by adding glazing. I think it looks ok as it is. I am the type of modeller who thinks it is more important to have the look and feeling rather than trying to replicate every detail exactly. I call it artistic freedom 🙂 but I also have the greatest respect for modellers who think differently.

Henke,,,   your model looks absolutely fantastic,,, your windows look very very nice and in my opinion don't need the plastic windows...  if it wasn't for "artistic freedom" there wouldn't be models or art.....

First thanks for all nice comments and and likes. It is encouraging. Last weekend there was not much modelling. My wife ordered me to build IKEA furniture instead ☹️. Anyhow, this weekend I did some work on the stern. She now has a name.
