Evening all,   today  was  "trying the impossible"  time   -  bending and fitting some conning tower  rails,   I  fitted one of the ladders  - that was "easy peazy"   but the  rails  - boy was it difficult   as its all ready been mentioned this PE  is tissue paper thin  and if a fold line is bent to much it breaks off,  I am not even attempting to fit a couple of levels up  - but think what I have fitted is ok.

Just did a calculation  - those  railings are a Huge  1.2mm  tall   - no wonder thay are hard to handle.

I guess then that the rails themselves are at most 0.2mm thick. That is seriously small, no wonder it’s so challenging. Is the conning tower assembly resin printed or moulded? I don’t see any layer lines or evidence of supports and, assuming it’s moulded, those moulds must be a work of perfection in themselves. Fly hawk should hire you or pay you, you’re doing them proud.

The brass PE sheets in this Flyhawk kit are 0.11mm thick!

I know because I'm working with the same PE and I measured it with a digital vernier calliper. It's enough to drive a man to drink!

Come to think of it, I don't really need tissue-thin PE to do that - 'er indoors manages to get me on the bottle without even trying! 🥴

That’s thinner than a standard sheet of copy paper. Extraordinary. I imagine they deform at the slightest slip of the fingers.

Hi all,   I had my normal Saturday off  so I could  relax infront of the tv,    anyway  onwards  on Sunday  where I will be battling with  somemore  Paper Extreme  (PE)   with a few more sections of Railings and  short ladders on the conning tower.

What is more important is the rigidity of the material. I used Aber PE from Poland. They were the worst. Could be bent by just paint brushing them. Then used many from Chinese manufacturers but not Flyhawk. They were better but still soft, while good in detail. Same for White Esign and Russian Micromask.

Japanese PE are the crispiest by far. They can be cut easily with worn blade or on a soft surface while still being durable and forgiving . Can even hear the cracking sound sometimes. Something like the Japanese knives i suppose.

Metal hardness can be achieved by proper treatment perhaps by high temperature. And obviously this has an cost and impact on quality of those material.

Ofourse being solid hard is not the case here as this would create folding problems. There is a magic balance that has to been found to make our lives easier.

Evening all,    I did a bit more work with my tissue  origami  still on the  conning tower  - so more rails and ladders  oh and a few  details - binocular stands etc.

The PE really looks nice. Railings and ladders always make a great difference. You are getting it very tidy even under the cruel eye of the camera

Thank you kindly Alan,   just to think there is Four seperate sub-assemblies  making up the conning tower  - each section will be  airbrushed  then brush painted  Corticene.

The binoculars  - I might try to use some of my acrylic  water to create the lenses .........." I dont think so" lol.

Thank you kindly Mike,    boy is it fiddly and delicate  - and can not be rushed,   I use the old fashioned way to remove and bend the PE  - sharp blade  then blade and tweezer flat end to hold the PE  while I use the blade to  bend  it,   then  holding it with tweezers  to glue in place is tricky  - takes great  skill to keep my hand still enough during this.

I think that's where a Hold and Fold comes in very handy.  It holds the piece in place, while you use a blade to create the bend.  I'll also on occasion use the Tamiya folding pliers (they have two sizes) which work well too, but easier to keep things steady in a Hold and Fold.

Evening all,    a bit more done this evening  -  I added a few bits to the Bridge  and a bit more PE,   I have added a  few items in the pic  for scale  the coin in a Ten Pence Piece  and my glasses.

Evening all,  will be doing a wee bit more later but firstly  what a day  -  the admiral  has been suffering with a very sore  ear  and dropped left side of her  face drooped  eye and mouth,   yep  we  feared that as well  (stroke)  so after  ringing our doctors  he rang  back and wanted to see her  asap,   we went to the surgery  and he checked he over,   he said it wasn't  a stroke  but after giving her an examination  he said she is suffering from Shingles  in her ear.   He said in an ideal world she would be in hospital  but instead  he gave her a course  of  Steroid  tabs.

 

She has certainlt been through the mill  of late.

 

So after making sure she is ok and doing our supper I will  do a wee bit more on my Hood.

Yes indeed  Mark,   I asked the doctor that and he  said  you have to come in contact with the rash and touch it  to  catch it, and she has no rash  just the dropped side of her face and really painful ear  - she is more  embarrassed about her face and speech  as  she has the appearance  of a stroke (thank goodness  it wasn't)

Yes, big relief it wasn't a stroke.  Just be careful yourself around her ear.  That's not something you want to catch either.

Evening all,   after cooking our supper  spag bol  as the admiral is on soft food due to her face  paralysis,   I did a bit more on the rear block  -  I added a couple of PE  rails, the  rear Hacs   and some  signal lamps  - also the two column platforms,   still some more PE to fit on the top.

Evening all,   not  a very large update  to be honest I only attached Two items  -  Two really small sections of rail  to finish off the rear  block, then It was time to do what the Admiral  our  doggy and I always  do  -  open  just one prezzy  each  with a mince pie or Two,  I  got her a new phone case  and she  brough me a few beers  (very nice)
