Hello, I have decided to make a ship in the bottle. Very much has to do with a few things. One its my nieces birthday and her name is Hannah , so I told her I would make her one. That's why I will start this log today , but I got to get set up for it. And I have to put my Pinta model away in it's display case,  might take awhile  lol.

  Two, it's @Glen McGuire  fault.

After reading his log I said I got to try that, so I bought one. Then I have read several others logs and booked mark them as well .I know I should take @Landlubber Mike  advice and build it first then show it because of  potential  embarrassment  😳  lol  But here goes I am hitting the bottle something I have not done in 38 years lol And I am close to 68 now lol. But I feel like a kid with a new toy , and these bottle builders  like to play lol.

So wish me luck I will need it, talk soon.

That is so awesome!  What a great gift and keepsake this will be for your niece.  The first SIB I did from scratch I chose the Charles W Morgan because my friend that gave me the bottle was named Morgan.  But I was selfish and kept the project for myself after I finished it rather than giving it to her!

I am glad you are doing a build log as you go.  I'm really looking forward to watching your work, Bob!

This is a fun little project Bob. I look forward to seeing your take on it.

Holy have you guys seen the size of the canons,  I don't know, I got a bad feeling about this master lol I had to get a magnifying glass to see lol.

Then I number the peices  0 to 19 and stared  glueing.  Then a little paint black on the deck ,primer on the hull. Then I painted the name on the transom added the keel ,and etched bulwark.

Tomorrow  I will do the black, and start the windlass and anchor . Then the guns ,really black, red, and brown  for the cannons lol  😆  I can't even see them.

 More soon.

Hey @Glen McGuire thanks so much for the painting tip, it work out great I think. Yes my first embarrassing moment was I call Glen and asked how he painted his, he told me and I told him that my transom didn't even have the name on it. How was I suppose to know if it was even a palindrome. You wold think I know that being a BOB lol. The first Mate came into the shipyard and turned it over and there it was lolYes it's a palindrome,I finished the black and painted  the canons  wow was that fun. Painted the deck house and anchors.

I broke the little tabs for the anchor  on both side so I will have to figure out a way to fix it 🙃 😒

Was going with the ideal of being trapped in a bottle, making the ship putting it a bottle then put the whole thing in a larger  bottle. We put  the bottle in a bottle  but it distort the view to much so thinking of something else. 🤔

So watching paint dry then I attach the house, anchors and windlass later today. This is insane but so much fun!!

Great work so far Bob. And yes, it’s a very tight fit to get it into the bottle, so grinding a little off the keel is a good idea.

Well moving on,   I have installed the cannons.  Right down to the brown for the wheels. I cut some disposable paint brushs down to size, one has three hairs for production painting, one has one hair for fine detailing  lol. The top left hand cannon looks like it misfired. I meant to do that lol 😆

One thing I do different is paint the name on later rather than sooner,  rough handing will ware it off , I need to study a few things in the detailing of painting,  three fine logs that I follow are painted different,  so choices have to be made. Painting all my mast black, I thought I would get a jump on it.  But,  I am starting to get into this.  My First Mate  BFF came over and looked at it and said if all else fails, you can break it all up and put it in the bottle  on a shore with rocks and say this is what it looks like after  hurricane  HANNAH ..LOL .. So If it all goes south I may take her up on it lol.

Going  to make the sails and anchors  and stuff, oh my. Do you realize  that no one will ever see my brown wheels?  Later my friend's.

Looking good Bob. What are you going to do about sails? Are you going to use the kit provided material or make your own? I would recommend having a go at making your own using silk span - it’s really not that difficult to do.

Thank you. I think I will go with the kit supplied, I am finding this tiny.  Going to have plenty of sails to make on My Mayflower,  LA Nina,  Viking Long Boat,  Sea of Galilee,  and the  Pegasus  lol

But I have started to look at how to make sails with silk span

Looking great Bob, you’re moving quickly!  One tip - be careful with the bowsprit and masts.  They can only take so many bends before they snap.  I had a rough time trying to glue my bowsprit back into the hull.

I recall it being a tight fit through the neck, but I don’t remember it being impossible and needing to carve things down.  I did have an issue with the main mast being probably 1mm too tall the for the inside of the bottle, so it’s bent down a touch to make it fit.  That could be because my hull was sitting higher with the sea.

Good luck!  Looking great!

Mike

It looks better than mine, Bob. I didn't paint the deck fittings.

I started mine five hours ago and had some difficulties with the hull planking. My current issue is that the kit's sails are not the proper size or shape. I set a paper (silkspan) and will make paper sails tomorrow. 😎

The manual said 0.60mm wood veneer sheets, but the real wood sheets are 0.72mm thick! As a consequence, the height of the deck is 1~2mm higher than the plan.

Today is anchor day. After repairing the little  peices  I broke off , looks like I am ready to tackle  this job.  Yep  they are not spaced right but who will see lol. The anchors are just hung by bending the eye bolt, will they fall off when I rap it all up and stick it the bottle?

Also looking at making water, I been looking on Amazon too many products.

I won't need much , no room to spare lol. I put a mast on temporarily to get a measurement  2/ 3/4 . I think I have 3 inches to work with going to be tight. It seem to go in and out  of the bottle  now but don't have the sails on.

I stained the sails,  but It didn't take the stain,  may  brush a little paint on before I insert the ship for the last time. The first Mate sewed on the bolt ropes, after I glued them on with  G-S hypo cement. Was not sure if the glue wood hold after crumpling  the sails up so we sewed them on as well

Its going well but this is so tiny, I really like doing this ship in the bottle, but will be really, really glad to get back  to my 1:60 scale  Mayflower  model lol.

Ok need water advice very small amount lol. Later my friend's.

Looks great - especially the sewing job on the sails!  Your first mate deserves a promotion!

Regarding the water, please avoid my Hannah build log for ideas.  You do NOT want to try what I tried.  Epic fail.

My preference now is epoxy resin for the water's base with a touch of acrylic paint dabbed on top (after the epoxy dries) for texture.  If you look at page 5 of my build log for the Independence (link in my signature below) you can see some pictures of what I do with the resin and acrylic paint.

The resin also works well for just a thin layer of water.  See my build log for Zheng He's Treasure Fleet for an example.  My bottle for that build had 3 bulbs and the resin was a different thickness in each, and super thin between 2 of the bulbs.

I got stuck at the entrance of a bottle. 😭 I'll buy a new bottle tomorrow...

I admire Amati's reasonable design, but this kit's production quality issue is repeating itself.

I believe that the main brass mast should have had one more hole at the top. After several considerations, I simply added the ring with CA glued string. In addition, I think the F lines are two riggings.

Without these modifications, the brass masts and yards warped easily when I folded them.

OK. I may finish this small project tomorrow if I find a proper glass bottle. See you again at the gallery. 😎

Very nice work, @modeller_masa!!  Looks like you figured out a rigging plan that will work.  It also looks like you have 3 pull threads, which is interesting.  I only had 2 when I did mine.  Here's what my Hannah rigging looked like.

20230125_204549.thumb.jpg.25572b8b6163053d988e5ad4692f2f60.jpgWow both you guys have great looking sails. I went with the kit sails, mainly because  I have not looked into making my own sails . There is so much to learn here about ships. Some day maybe.

This is  my Hannah rigged. Not an easy job .  But some how I think I got it. There is a few lines that I have to tighten,  a few sails to surcure , but for the most part I think the rigging is done. Despite  the kit sails, which I think are to large looking they do look nice, and after it is  in the bottle  it will look great lol.

Thanks @Glen McGuire  for the advice on the water. Amazon wants double the price that I can get from a hobby store in the city. So will go there, but not today we are in for another round of winter, hooray  more shoveling.  Here are a few pictures of were I am at now. Going to start looking for some stand ideals.

P.S. I forgot  the shrouds and rat lines oh boy.

Well today we dug our selfs out of the snow. Not bad waiting for the next one lol.

With not being able to go to the model store for water effects,  I played around with super glue and blue paint. It was going OK on the practice jar, but then I realized I can't paint the bottle  that was supplied , no way to paint in the corner.  So I thought out side the bottle in this case lol. Painted the strip on the bottom  white scratches for waves and a few black spots for whales.

I wish it was going to be that easy  on the real bottle.  Now for the stand I am thinking  a mirror  back ground  on a oak frame,  so you can see more than one ship . Have to see how that looks.

So now I will paint the bottom of my bottle  seal it with shellac, slip the ship in and put it on the stand. My path along seems straight forward.  But you never know . These pictures will show you what I am going for.  A great weight is off now that the ship part is finished.  Now let's see what happens with it when I smash it up and bring it back to life. LOL.

Ok , Did you guys hear the scream of joy. Yes the Hannah is in the bottle. I made a little video  of putting it in, you can hear things bending to the point of breaking. When it finally slipped in, you can hear a big sigh of relief.  I glued it in places , let it dry good then the fun began. Started pulling the out the lines all felt good, then snap frist pull line broke. Then the other one broke.

I could see one sail off and the rear mast was bent badly  😢.  7 hours later  I got it the point where I could live with it . Hannah is going to love her Hannah  can't wait to give her the ship 💗 💓

The water was  made by painting the bottom of the bottle with super glue , then  blue, then I scratched the blue and then painted the white.

Then I scratched some fish lol just made little marks on the bottle, then painted it black to show up good.  Looks like sharks at the back and a couple  of whales on the front.  I LOVE IT!

So now I have to clean it up ,glue on the bottle...easy fix. Now I needto come up with a stand.
